Explanation of the Five Categories. Explanation of the Five Categories. The sacred scripture of the Vinaya, Volume Twenty-eight. A summary of the fivefold aspects from the Vinaya: abiding nearby, dispelling fear, giving and receiving, stealing, full ordination and boundaries, food as well, occasions for division, bathhouses, and the last. In brief: abiding nearby, moral discipline, truth, what should be spoken, Parajika, two offenses and views, decline and heavy offenses, how is it for a son of good family, other than that, arranged in order. The venerable Upali asked the Buddha, the Bhagavan: Venerable, if a disputing monk wishes to dispute with another, where should he dispute? How should a monk enter into an occasion for division? Upali, if a monk wishes to dispute with another monk, he should dispute while abiding in five places. What are the five ways a monk enters into an occasion for division? With the upper robe draped over one shoulder, shoes removed, sitting in the manner of an elder, bowing with palms joined to the Sangha of monks, abiding with a mind of loving-kindness, and causing the disputing monk to enter into an occasion for division. A disputing monk who wishes to dispute with another should keep five things in mind internally and then dispute with the other. What are the five? Am I endowed with moral discipline and have I previously been fully ordained? Am I endowed with shame and discernment? Do I wish to learn the precepts that bind? Have I heard much and do I retain what I have heard? Am I skilled in reciting the teachings I have heard, and so on? Am I completely free from doubt regarding the Vinaya and the Higher Vinaya? Thinking thus, a monk who wishes to dispute with another should, in this way, keep these five things in mind internally and then dispute with the other. Furthermore, if a disputing monk wishes to dispute, he should keep five things in mind internally and then dispute. What are the five? Thus, is what I wish to dispute with another true or untrue? Is this matter that is seized upon timely or untimely? Is this matter that is seized upon appropriate or inappropriate? Is this matter that is seized upon meaningful or meaningless? Should one speak about this based on seeing, hearing, or doubt? Thus, a monk who wishes to dispute with another.

One should keep mindfulness close in these five aspects and admonish others. The monk who admonishes should give the monk being admonished a chance to speak in five ways. What are the five? Like this, let you know the admonishment. Venerable one, I speak to you. Venerable one, I admonish you. Venerable one, I remind you. Venerable one, please give me a chance. From pārājika, saṃghāvaśeṣa, prāyaścittika, prati-deśanīya, and duḥkṛta, what do I say to you? What do I tell you? What do I admonish you about? What do I remind you of? What opportunity do I give you to speak? If it becomes a duḥkṛta, whether it arises from pārājika, or from saṃghāvaśeṣa, or from prāyaścittika, or from prati-deśanīya, or from the śikṣāpada, these should be told to you. Should it be confessed? Should it be restrained? Or is it far beyond discipline, or does it arise from harsh words, or the duḥkṛta of manifest conduct, should be told to you. What you have seen, or heard, or suspected, what should be said? The transgressions of body and the transgressions of speech, what should be said to you? Is the prāyaścittika heavy, or light, or with remainder, or without remainder, or completely beyond, what prāyaścittika should be said to you? Has the morality been broken, or the view been broken, or the livelihood been broken, or all broken, what should be said to you? You walk, or stand, or sit, or sleep, or walk, what conduct should be said to you? What was done in the village, or done in the monastery, or done on the road, or strayed from the road, or done in a secluded place, or in what place, should admonish you, thus the monk who admonishes, separates the opportunity in these five ways, lets the yidam appear, and then should admonish. If he does not admit it, then the monk who admonishes should admonish with a mind of loving-kindness, a mind of compassion, a mind of benefit, a mind of rejoicing, and a mind of wanting to uplift. The monk who answers, when being admonished, should also abide in five places, and then give the admonishing monk a chance. What are the five places? Rising from the seat, taking off the shoes, the upper garment slung over one shoulder,
