Explanation of Conduct for Subduing, Upper Part. Explanation of Conduct for Subduing, Upper Part. In brief, the thought of Good Giving Vajra, as well as the woolly cow and the female hawk, the cow and the female yak, the female wild animal, the donkey, sheep, dog, and female pig, etc. The Buddha, the Bhagavan, was dwelling in Vaishali, in the multi-storied house by the Monkey Pond. Because the training was established for Good Giving, the son of Kalandaka, there is no offense for the first offender. When I had not established the training, I repeatedly engaged in impure conduct, practicing the act of intercourse, and I wondered what my first offense was. Therefore, doubt and regret arose in my mind. Having spoken thus to the monks, the monks petitioned the Bhagavan. The Bhagavan spoke, "Monks, when the training was not established, whatever Good Giving, the son of Kalandaka, did that was exceedingly past, all of it is a first offense. For the first offender, there is no offense." A monk named Vajra's Son, without offering the training, without confessing the broken training, became a householder. Then he engaged in impure conduct, practicing the act of intercourse, and he thought to himself, "First, I will ask the monks. If I am able to go forth and be fully ordained, then I will go forth. If not, I will remain here." Thinking thus, from when he became like that until the Bhagavan spoke, it should be explained in detail. "Monks, without offering the training, without confessing the broken training, having become a household object, relying on impure conduct, practicing the act of intercourse, that person is not able to go forth and be fully ordained again." Similarly, the training should be explained. Furthermore, if any monk, without offering the training, without confessing the broken training, engages in impure conduct, practicing the act of intercourse, that monk is defeated and should not dwell together. A monk was dwelling alone in a solitary place, and not far from him, a woolly cow gave birth to a calf, and that woolly cow gave birth to a female calf. That mother went for food, and that monk took grass and gave it to her, and gave her water to drink. As she was sitting there, he saw her female organ open. Having seen that, he became attached.

Then he went back and entered there. That became a shameful thing, and he thought, 'Have I not committed a Pārājika offense?' He became doubtful, and he told the monks in detail about what had happened. The Blessed One said, 'Monks, because there was no touching there, there is no Pārājika offense, but there is a sthūlātyaya offense. When that young yak grew up, it saw the female yak's vulva. When it saw it, it became lustful, and wanting to enter there, it placed its penis on the female yak's vulva, rubbed it a little, and became frightened, thinking, 'Have I not committed a Pārājika offense?' He told in detail about what had happened. The Blessed One said, 'Monks, for one who is frightened, there is no lust, so there is no Pārājika offense, but there is a sthūlātyaya offense.' Just like the female yak, so too are the mare, the she-ass, the doe, the ewe, the bitch, and the sow. In short, becoming mad and mentally disturbed, and those afflicted by disease, and those who perceive the wrong path as the right path, these three paths should be well proclaimed. Venerable, the Blessed One said that there is no fault for the madman. To what extent is one called a madman? There are five ways in which one becomes mad: the exhaustion of relatives, the exhaustion of possessions, the exhaustion of wealth, the imbalance of the elements, and being possessed by non-humans, and the ripening of past karma. These five ways cause one to become mad. If he knows that it is a monk's property, then he knows it as it is. If he does not know that it is a monk's property, then there is no offense for the madman. Venerable, the Blessed One said that there is no fault for the mentally disturbed. To what extent is one called mentally disturbed? There are five ways in which one is called mentally disturbed: when a non-human disturbs his mind, when a non-human possesses him, when a non-human steals his radiance, when the elements are imbalanced, and when past karma ripens. These five ways are called mentally disturbed, and that is the detailed explanation. Venerable, the Blessed One said that there is no fault for one afflicted by disease.
