It transforms. The origin of the story is in Shravasti. The bhikkhuni Thuboom Gamo, because another patron had generated faith, had someone build a summer house, and many bhikkhunis lived there. After some time, about five hundred merchants came from the south, carrying goods and arriving in Shravasti. Those merchants searched for houses to rent to store their goods, but could not find any. Then they searched everywhere in Shravasti but could not find any. It was the trading season, and they piled up the goods at the crossroads of streets and roads, and as they sat saying it would hail, the sun was also about to set, and at that time a little rain fell. They sat with their hands on their cheeks, very worried. Thuboom Gamo saw them and said, 'Good sirs, since it is raining, what are you doing sitting in the street? What is wrong with putting the goods in a place?' Those people said, 'Holy Mother, we have searched everywhere in Shravasti, but those unfriendly worldly people, even with rent, we cannot find a house, what should we do?' She said, 'Children, you should know what the night is like, give more rent, and look for a house. These things will become unsaleable, and who will buy them if they get wet in the rain?' They said, 'Holy Mother, these worldly people are very unfriendly, even if we give them double the rent for the house, no one will rent to us. It seems that this is my fate, no matter what, after staying one night, we will leave.' She said, 'Children, in that case, give more rent for the house and stay in my summer house.' They said, 'Holy Mother, good, we will do that.' Then, Thuboom Gamo drove the bhikkhunis out of the summer house at night and rented the summer house to those merchants. Those bhikkhunis, soaked in the rain and with their robes wet, went to other summer houses. The other bhikkhunis asked, 'You old women, why have you come here at night with your robes wet?' They told the story in detail. Those bhikkhunis of the small group ridiculed, insulted, and spoke ill of them: 'How can the patron rent out the summer house of the bhikkhunis?' The Buddha said: "Bhikkhus, it is common for bhikkhunis to be ridiculed. Therefore, bhikkhunis should not rent out summer dwellings." If a bhikkhuni rents out a summer dwelling, she commits an offense entailing expulsion. The story takes place in Shravasti. The bhikkhuni Thulla Nandā took young children into the bathing place and scrubbed their bodies with tiles and bathed. Those children became infatuated, looking around and whispering: 'Look! The shaven-headed female ascetic, like a huge fat woman dressed in armor, is rubbing, wiping, and smearing her body.' They began to ridicule her, laughing at her. When the bhikkhus heard about this, they reported it to the Blessed One. The Blessed One, knowing that those young children were often ridiculed because she had done something inappropriate, said: "Bhikkhus, Thulla Nandā has done something unseemly and terrible, so that those young children ridicule her. Therefore, bhikkhunis should not rub their bodies. If bhikkhunis rub their bodies, they commit an offense entailing expulsion." In short: Do not rub the body with the body, nor with stone slabs, nor with cloth strips, nor with fists, nor with anything at all. The Buddha, the Blessed One, was dwelling in Shravasti, in Jeta's Grove, at Anathapindika's monastery. The Blessed One said: "Bhikkhunis, do not rub your bodies." They rubbed with stone slabs, and that also became an object of offense. The Blessed One said: "Do not rub with stone slabs." They rubbed with cloth strips. That also became an object of offense. The Blessed One said: "Do not rub with cloth strips." They rubbed with their fists, and that also became an object of offense. The Blessed One said: "Do not rub with your fists."
