Explaining the Twenty Dharmas of Sanghavasesa Explaining the Twenty Dharmas of Sanghavasesa Summary: Mediation and baselessness, the third is taking a small portion, the fourth is doing whatever, the fifth is without attachment, traveling day and night, and agreeing on the other side of the river. The Buddha, the Bhagavan, was dwelling in Sravasti, in the Jeta Grove, Anathapindika's Garden. At that time, a person named Black, the son of a hunter, would converse with the Brahmins and householders of Sravasti, come and go, speak, inquire, associate, befriend, and lead them into their homes. Those who would give their daughters to anyone would also say to Black, the son of a hunter: "Black one, is that boy intelligent, diligent, capable, able to feed and clothe the daughter, able to give many garments, and able to take on small tasks?" If he were to say, "That boy is truly intelligent, diligent, capable, able to feed and clothe the daughter, able to give many garments, and able to take on small tasks," then they would give their daughters to them. If he were to say, "Alas, that boy is not truly intelligent, is lazy, incapable, unable to feed and clothe the daughter, unable to give many garments, and not able to take on small tasks," then they would not give their daughters to them. Similarly, those who would seek daughters would also say to Black, the son of a hunter: "Black one, is that daughter intelligent, capable, and able to live prudently in the home?" From then on, the rest should be spoken as if they were speaking about a boy. Whoever's daughter is well-married, they would say: "We asked Black, the son of a hunter, and the boy to whom the daughter was given is intelligent, diligent, capable, able to feed and clothe the daughter, able to give many garments, and able to take on small tasks." For those who converse with Black, the son of a hunter, from speaking to leading into the home.

For those, it is also praised that it will become like this. Similarly, whoever gives a daughter wrongly, they will say: We asked the son of the hunter, Black Son, before giving the daughter. That boy is neither smart, nor lazy, unable to do things, unable to provide that girl with enough food and clothing, only letting her do a small amount of work. Those who have dealings with the son of the hunter, Black Son, and introduce him into the home, will also say that it will become like this, not praising. As for how the boy is, it should be the same for the girl. At that time, the son of the hunter, Black Son, received both praise and dispraise at the same time. After that, the twelve groups of nuns quoted the words of the son of the hunter, Black Son, and when the Brahmins and householders ridiculed those who mediated and introduced people into families where they should not be introduced, the monks reported to the Blessed One. Then, the Blessed One thought: My female disciples, the Bhikkhuni Sangha, will understand the meaning, and the precepts I have established will also be perfected. Therefore, for this event, this origin, this thing, and this occasion, the Blessed One gathered the Bhikkhuni Sangha. The Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, act knowingly, act knowingly, not unknowingly; act when it is time, not when it is not time; act in accordance with the meaning, not in accordance with what is meaningless. The Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, are like this, for what is not in accordance with the meaning, they will block it with a water faucet. Therefore, the Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, are like this, for what is in accordance with the meaning, they know the time. The Blessed One asked the twelve groups of nuns: Bhikkhunis, is it true that you have done such an improper and unseemly thing? Blessed One: It is true that we have done it. The Buddha, the Blessed One, said to the twelve groups: This behavior that is not in accordance with the behavior of a renunciant, that is improper, and that is not in accordance with the rules, is not something that a renunciant should do.
