Explaining the Third Defeat. Explaining the Third Defeat. The general summary is: Having slaves and driving away wild animals, oneself and poison, corpses and greenhouses are the last. The summary is: Having slaves and managers, those with beaks and Śirika, begging bowls and Dharma robes, those in the womb and merchants. The Buddha, the Bhagavan, was in Śrāvastī, residing on the bank of the delightful river, in the grove of lamp trees. Then, the Bhagavan said to the Sangha of monks: Monks, meditate on the impure! By practicing and meditating on the impure, and doing it many times, it will become a great fruit and a great benefit. Thus, he taught the impure, and praised the practice of meditating on the impure, so the monks practiced meditating on the impure. When the monks meditated on the impure, they became discouraged by the decaying body, developed aversion, became doubtful, and scolded, even taking out weapons, also eating poison, also binding with ropes, also jumping off cliffs, and in this way, monks also killed monks. Then, a certain monk, discouraged by the decaying body, developed aversion, became doubtful, and scolded, went to the place of the hermit Spe who repels wild animals, and having arrived, said this to the hermit Spe who repels wild animals: Good sir, come here! Please end my life, and whatever is my begging bowl and Dharma robe will belong to you. Then, the hermit Spe who repels wild animals ended the life of that monk, and taking the sword stained with blood, went to the place of the delightful river, and having arrived, squatted on the bank of the delightful river and washed the sword stained with blood. Then, a deity of the demon host, sitting above the stream of the delightful river, said this to the hermit Spe who repels wild animals: Good sir, well done! Well done! Like you, an ascetic who possesses discipline and qualities, causes those who have not crossed over to cross over, causes those who have not been liberated to be liberated, causes those who have not breathed out to breathe out, causes those who have not completely passed into nirvana

To make them completely pass beyond sorrow, you will accumulate much merit, and whatever begging bowl and religious robes they have will also become yours, and this too will be an extra gain for you. Then, the deer-repelling ascetic thought, 'Indeed, it is true that I cause monks who are virtuous and endowed with qualities to transcend what has not been transcended, to liberate what has not been liberated, to breathe out what has not been breathed out, and to completely pass beyond sorrow what has not been completely passed beyond sorrow. I will accumulate much merit, and whatever begging bowl and religious robes they have will become mine, and that too will be an extra gain for me.' In this way, he came to have a greatly sinful view. Then, the deer-repelling ascetic hid a sharp sword in his armpit and wandered from garden to garden, from temple to temple, from house to house, from promenade to promenade, following the wrong path. Seeing those monks, he said this: 'Who will cause monks who are virtuous and endowed with qualities to transcend what has not been transcended, to liberate what has not been liberated, to breathe out what has not been breathed out, and to completely pass beyond sorrow what has not been completely passed beyond sorrow?' Then, a certain monk, weary of this body of pus, disgusted, doubtful, and dwelling in reproach, came out and said this to the deer-repelling ascetic: 'O good sir, I have not transcended, please transcend me! I have not been liberated, please liberate me! I have not breathed out, please breathe me out! I have not completely passed beyond sorrow, please cause me to completely pass beyond sorrow!' Then, the deer-repelling ascetic caused that monk to be deprived of life. In that way, from two, three, up to sixty monks were deprived of life. At that time, the monks became few, diminished, like a hollow drum, and the monastic community of monks became thin. Then, the Blessed One himself, on the fifteenth day of the Uposatha, sat in the middle of the monastic community of monks on the seat that had been prepared. Having sat down, the Blessed One addressed the entire assembly.
