Eighth Section: Section on Many Guests, Thieves, etc. Eighth Section: Section on Many Guests, Thieves, etc. Summary: Stealing and those under twenty, digging and guests and precepts, fighting and not speaking and walking, disrespect and drinking out of time. The Buddha Bhagavan was staying in Shravasti, in the Jeta Grove of Anathapindika's Garden. A certain monk had vowed to spend the summer retreat in Rajagriha, in the Kalantaka Grove of the Radiant Garden. Then, that monk, having spent the three months of summer, possessed robes, the robes were complete, and carrying his bowl and robes, he set out to pay homage at the feet of the Bhagavan, seeking companions to go to Shravasti. He saw some merchants cutting Shogam wood and said to them: Wise ones, where are you going? They replied: Venerable, we are going to Shravasti. He said: Wise ones, I too will go to Shravasti with you. They said: Venerable, so be it. They thought it was a good idea, but later regretted it and said: Venerable, we are merchants cutting Shogam wood, so we go sometimes, and sometimes we don't, sometimes on the road, and sometimes not, so it is not appropriate for you to walk with us. He said: Are you going empty-handed? Or are you going with loads? They replied: We are going with loads. He said: If you are going with loads, why can't I, who am going empty-handed, follow behind you? They said: If you must go, take this path, and wait here until we arrive. He went there and sat down. After a while, those merchants cutting Shogam wood came, and he set out with them. When they reached a Shogam wood site on a cliff, those merchants cutting Shogam wood, fearing the cutters, began to walk from the side road, and that monk also went ahead. As they were walking from the side road, they were seen by those cutting Shogam wood. They said: Hey, merchants cutting Shogam wood, where are you going? They saw that monk walking ahead and said:

Those Shahukam merchants on the land, they went in front of the Shakya's son renunciate for no reason, (saying) "These people have committed a crime, they should be killed!" They beat that monk very hard, even breaking his bowl. They also broke the bowls and water pots, tore the robes, thinking he was going to die, and abandoned him. Those Shahukam merchants said to that monk, "Venerable one, you have obtained the right to exempt young people from the king, so please go to the king and tell him, please cut off the hands and feet of these Shahukam people!" Those Shahukam people were afraid and began to beg forgiveness from that monk, saying, "Venerable one, please forgive us!" The monk's heart was as soft as butter, so he said, "I forgive you." Those Shahukam merchants said, "Even if you forgive us, we will not forgive you." The Shahukam people said, "Please forgive us too!" The Shahukam merchants said, "We will forgive with an oath, if you Shahukam people do not allow us merchants to pay the Shahukam tax, we will also forgive you." Those Shahukam people agreed to those merchants. That monk also gradually arrived in Shravasti (Jetavana). The monks said to him, "Living one, welcome! Welcome! How did you pass peacefully? Living one, how did you pass peacefully?" He said, "I was almost killed by the Shahukam people." "Why?" He told the details of the situation at that time. The monks said, "Can you travel on the road with thieves of the same intention? It is because you cannot that such a fault has occurred." Those monks of few desires scolded, "Why should monks travel on the road with thieves of the same intention?" They whipped, they scolded. At that time, the monks reported this matter to the Blessed One. Then, because of this event, because of this origin, because of this situation, the Blessed One convened the Sangha of monks, and so on, as before. The Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, knowingly commit offenses, and so on.

Again, as before. The Buddha, the Bhagavan, rebuked that bhikshu: Bhikshu, is it true that you go on the road with fellow thieves? Venerable one, yes. The Buddha, the Bhagavan, rebuked, saying: It is not the conduct of a shramana, it is not in accordance, it is not proper, it is not in accordance with the rules, this is not what a renunciant should do. Then, after rebuking in various ways, the Bhagavan said to the bhikshus: Bhikshus, therefore, having truly seen the ten benefits, the basis of training in the Vinaya should be established for the shravakas, etc., as before. My shravakas should recite the basis of training in the Vinaya in this way: Furthermore, any bhikshu who goes on the road with fellow thieves, even to the village, commits a downfall. Furthermore, any bhikshu means one who is of this Dharma, or any other such one. With fellow thieves, thieves means robbers and those who destroy villages, as well as merchants, gamblers, and swindlers. Going on the road means going on the road to the monastery. Even to the village means even to the distance of a yojana. Committing a downfall means burning, cooking, and falling into sentient hell, animals, hungry ghosts, evil destinies, bad paths, and wrong views. Furthermore, as long as the downfall is not confessed and individually confessed, it will hinder virtuous dharmas, therefore it is said to commit a downfall. So, how does one commit a downfall? As long as a bhikshu goes on the road with fellow thieves even a little, he will completely commit a downfall. If seven villages are separated by a distance of one yojana, if a bhikshu goes from a village to a monastery, he commits a misdeed for every half yojana, and a downfall for every yojana. It is the same from the monastery to the village, he commits a misdeed for every half yojana, and a downfall for every yojana. Letting thieves enter a hiding place, and lost thieves
