Chapter Twenty-seven: Showing the Abandonment of Separation by Seven Days. Chapter Twenty-seven: Showing the Abandonment of Separation by Seven Days. The Blessed One Buddha was dwelling at Jeta Grove, Anathapindika's monastery, in Shravasti. Not far from Shravasti, there was a mountain rock where a wealthy householder lived, possessing much wealth and great enjoyment. He was devout, virtuous, and had a good mind. He dedicated a high stable-like temple to the Sangha, with windows, windows with lattices, and adorned with railings, pleasing to the heart and eye, like a ladder to the heavens. Sixty monks observed the summer retreat in that temple, so he placed guards, warning those who would take things without the householder's permission not to steal beds or small beds. Some time later, another sixty monks, traveling through the countryside, arrived at that mountain rock, seeking a place to stay. Someone said to them, "Venerables, why do you not stay in the temple? Where is the beautiful temple?" The venerable ones replied, "Is the monastery here?" When those monks entered, the guard saw them. He greeted them with words of welcome, assigned them dwellings, and offered beds, small beds, cushions, blankets, and so on. He borrowed a water strainer and said, "Venerables, please filter the water for a moment, and in the meantime, I will inform the householder." Then that person went to the householder and said, "Householder, rejoice! Sixty monks have suddenly arrived at your temple." The householder respectfully composed himself and said to his family, "Wise ones, please satisfy the Sangha of monks who have come to my temple with well-prepared drinks, including brown sugar, honey, rock candy, raisins, and Nepali apples." The householder prepared the well-prepared drinks and went to the temple. The monks had also filtered the water and were seated according to their respective customs. The householder saw those monks from afar, and the temple was like a sea.

Having seen it as full as a lotus, with the power of great faith, he spoke verses from the transformed tantra: 'Whether it be a town or a monastery, whether it be a valley or a plain, wherever it is suitable to dwell, that land is delightful.' Then, having prepared a well-mixed drink, he satisfied the Sangha of monks residing in his place, and taking the bowl himself, together with the Sangha of monks, he prostrated to the stupa, entered the temple, and sat at the end of the elders. The abbot of the Sangha spoke of merit, and the householder prostrated to the two feet, saying, 'Tomorrow, would you please allow the noble Sangha to accept alms in my house?' The monks also accepted. The householder prostrated to the two feet and left. The householder satisfied the monks with food the next day and also offered drinks at inappropriate times, and the monks also taught the Dharma. Later, in the same way, the abbot of the Sangha spoke of merit, and the householder sat at the end of the elders and said, 'Noble ones, I have not built this temple for myself, nor for my relatives, but for the sake of the noble ones. Please accept to spend the summer retreat here, and I will serve the noble ones without sparing any resources.' The monks said, 'Householder, in Shravasti, the Blessed One, the King of Dharma, resides in person, and from time to time, a certain monk directly realizes the state of Arhat, and a certain monk achieves the intermediate state of impurity. Even those who are skilled in grammar will hear of it. The king is also very devoted to the teachings, as are Queen Mallika, the royal princess Yartshul Lam, the venerable Khyentse, Nyingpa, the female devotee Maga, the mother of Deer Holder, and many other faithful people. Therefore, there, both material and Dharma enjoyments are abundant, so let us go there.' Noble ones, the enjoyment of the Dharma depends on the noble ones themselves.'

Because worldly enjoyment depends on me, please rejoice, and it will not diminish in the slightest. The abbot of the Sangha said: Those who are blessed with long life, the Blessed One has said that the faith of the faithful should be increased, and that one should be compassionate towards the patrons. Therefore, one should reside here. So they resided there. The wise ones began to examine the inside and outside of that monastery separately. Seeing that the monastery was full of flowers, abundant with fruit, and very delightful, the abbot of the Sangha said: Those who are virtuous, this monastery is full of flowers, abundant with fruit, and very delightful, if we vow to stay here in the early summer, then all the flowers and fruits will not be fully enjoyed. We must vow to stay in the late summer. So they vowed to stay there in the late summer. That patron only had that one monastery, so whatever he thought of giving and doing, he gave and did it all in that monastery. There were no other monasteries in that mountain village, so whatever the people of that mountain village thought of giving and doing, they all gave it in that monastery. There were no other monasteries near that mountain village, so whatever the people near that mountain village thought of giving and doing, they all gave and did it in that monastery, so the monks who vowed to stay there received many gains. The usual behavior of the heretics in the last month of autumn is to gather together immediately after the end of the retreat and discuss with each other: What kind of work should we do so that we can enjoy and live comfortably throughout the year without having to work hard? They thought: We should destroy these monks, the sons of Shakya. Others said: It is difficult to fill the stomachs of these people even if they recite hundreds of thousands of verses, if they have nothing, why should we stay there for so long? Then there was someone who knew the origins of the monks who said: What do you know?
