Twenty-sixth, Showing Abandonment Arising from Dependence. Twenty-sixth, Showing Abandonment Arising from Dependence. The Buddha, the Bhagavan, was dwelling at Shravasti in Jeta's Grove, Anathapindika's Garden. In a certain mountain cave, there lived a householder who was faithful, virtuous, and of good intention. He had a monastery built for the Sangha, a high stable-like structure with air vents, latticed windows, adorned with railings, pleasing to the heart and eye, like a stairway to heaven, and furnished with abundant beds, couches, and utensils. Sixty monks resided there, and the householder provided them with robes, alms, and other necessities. Later, when the householder passed away, those monks went to the householder's son and said: "Good sir, your father used to provide robes, alms, and other necessities for sixty monks. Can you also provide robes, alms, and other necessities for us sixty monks?" He replied: "Venerable ones, some attend to a hundred, some to a thousand, some to a hundred thousand. Some even find it difficult to support themselves, so I am unable to do so." Then, those monks departed from that monastery. Two elderly renunciates from that mountain cave, having collected alms, arrived at that monastery. Like-minded individuals arriving from the northern road saw the monastery from afar, and they went there, paid homage to the stupa with verses, and then entered the monastery. When they found the monastery empty, they thought: "Are the monks engaged in meditation inside? Or have they gone to engage in misconduct?" They searched all around and saw the two elderly renunciates, and they asked them: "Venerable ones, where have the monks gone?" The two replied: "Good sirs, no monks reside here, because the householder who had this monastery built
