The Buddha, the Bhagavan, was dwelling in Shravasti, in the Jeta Grove, Anathapindika's Garden. In Shravasti, there was a householder who took a wife from a family of equal status. He played with her, rejoiced with her, and enjoyed happiness. At another time, that householder became attached to another woman's wife, and that woman repeatedly refused him, saying, "Prince, do not do this." No matter how much he refused, she did not turn back, and his wife also engaged in impure acts with other men. The householder also gave his wife to other men, and his wife also gave herself to other men, and in this way, both families declined. They both had a daughter who was a servant, and the householder beat that daughter with fists and slaps, saying, "It is she who has ruined the family." The daughter said, "Of course I know how the family has declined, but how can I say those words that are not worthy of praise?" The neighbors heard this and went to the householder and the householder's wife, praising the merits of keeping vows as much as possible, and speaking of the faults of not keeping vows, and made them take refuge and abide in the precepts. The householder was rude, stubborn, and fierce, and began to beat the daughter again. The wife said to him, "Prince, when we did not know about karma and the ripening of karma, of course we could beat her. Now that we rely on the virtuous friend, the noble Nanda, we know about karma and the ripening of karma, so know that the world enjoys the fruits of its own karma, who is whose slave? Do not beat this daughter anymore. Good girl, I am pleased that you say that. Daughter, come here, take a bath and come here." After the daughter took a bath and came, he put a new dress on her and said, "Daughter, be happy!"

为我做吧！那个女孩心想：这对户主夫妇以前很凶狠、粗暴、严厉，总是用拳头和棍子打我，给我粗劣的食物和衣服。现在他们变得像我的父母一样了。她又想：自从尊者近喜开始进入这个家以来，户主就变得像父母一样了，我该如何让尊者近喜高兴呢？她心想：如果我从这里偷一点东西来供养，户主肯定会打我很多，把我放回原来的位置。想着，她就待在那里。户主的妻子对户主说：王子的儿子，请听我说！尊者近喜是我们的善知识，尊者近喜将我们从污垢中分离出来，安置于皈依和学处，还经常用佛法来教导我们，我们也应该用一些财物来供养他。好姑娘，就这样做吧！王子的儿子，我让人把细毛织物拿来，从那细毛织物中请某位织工织一块大布，之后再把那块大布献上。户主把那细毛织物交给织工，说道：善面容者，你用这细毛织物织一块大布，献给尊者近喜。就这样做吧！那个女孩听到后心想：我要为尊者近喜增添喜悦。近喜也早上穿好裙子，拿着钵和法衣，在曼托（Manto）开始乞食，逐渐乞食到那家，那个女孩把家打扫干净，扔掉扫帚，她看到近喜后，向他的双脚顶礼，说道：我要为尊者近喜增添喜悦。近喜说道：女孩，你要为我增添什么喜悦呢？户主会献给你一块大布的。近喜心想：地上有多少贪欲者，今天这个女孩也想让我和他们一样吗？

Now they have become like my parents. She thought again: Since the venerable Nede entered this house, the householder has become like a parent, how should I make the venerable Nede happy? She thought: If I steal a little something from here to offer, the householder will surely beat me a lot and put me back in my original place. Thinking, she stayed there. The householder's wife said to the householder: Son of the king, please listen! The venerable Nede is our spiritual friend, the venerable Nede separates us from defilements, places us in refuge and the precepts, and often teaches us with the Dharma, we should also offer him some material things. Good girl, do it like that! Son of the king, I will have the fine wool fabric brought, and from that fine wool fabric, ask a certain weaver to weave a large cloth, and then offer that large cloth. The householder gave the fine wool fabric to the weaver and said: Good-looking one, weave a large cloth from this fine wool fabric and offer it to the venerable Nede. Do it like that! When the girl heard this, she thought: I will add joy to the venerable Nede. Nede also put on his skirt in the morning, took his bowl and Dharma robe, and started begging for alms in Manto, gradually begging for alms to that house, the girl cleaned the house and threw away the broom, when she saw Nede, she prostrated to his feet and said: I will add joy to the venerable Nede. Nede said: Girl, what joy do you want to add to me? The householder will offer you a large cloth. Nede thought: How many greedy people are there on earth, does this girl also want me to be like them today?
