Then you will understand. Saying this, Nida and Nadus took half of it and also took his lower garment. That householder, holding a wooden stick, followed like an ox. The gatekeeper saw it and said: Householder, I only saw you wearing a double layer of cloth suitable for a great man, have those been robbed by robbers? Good man, I was not robbed by robbers, but by the nun Nida with verbal Dharma. The custom of the householder Anathapindika is to get up early every morning and go with five hundred relatives to pay homage to the Blessed One and all the elders. Therefore, the householder Anathapindika got up early every morning and came out of Shravasti with five hundred relatives, and the gatekeeper saw it and said: Householder, you lead so many followers here, be careful not to be robbed anyway. Hey, the monarch of the inland, are the robbers stationed between the Jeta Grove and the road? Not between the roads, but inside the Jeta Grove itself. Hey, monarch of the inland, you are like black wool, whoever comes in and out of this gate, the Blessed One and all the elders, no one will turn you white. I accept the dust under the feet of the Blessed One and all the elders with my head. A few days ago, a householder came wearing a double layer of cloth suitable for a great man, his cloth was robbed by Nida with verbal Dharma, and that householder left cursing and wearing shorts. Then, the householder Anathapindika thought: That is my business, thinking he went to the Jeta Grove, Nida saw it and said: Householder, Aroka Ya. The householder said: Even if it is not Aroka Ya, it is okay. Householder, you used to be like smoke to me, why are you burning like a flame now? How can I not burn? Others renounce to abandon desires, but the nun Nida is only for the obvious increase of desires. What have I done? You robbed a householder who came to the Jeta Grove of his double layer of cloth and Nadus.

Afterwards, wouldn't you scold that householder? Nearsay said, 'That is because in the world, gods are said to be givers, while pretas are said to be obstructers.' Did he offer you a bowl filled with food? The householder said, 'If it is unbearable, then let the foundation of learning be established! Should I just ignore it?' Then the householder Anāthapiṇḍada went to where the Blessed One was, and after going, he bowed his head to the two feet of the Blessed One, and sat down on one side. After sitting down on one side, the householder Anāthapiṇḍada said this to the Blessed One: 'Venerable ones, these noble ones beg for clothes from those who are not householders or relatives of the householder. Alas! Blessed One, it would be appropriate for the Blessed One to establish some mindfulness for the noble ones, so that the noble ones will not beg for clothes from those who are not householders or relatives of the householder.' The Blessed One did not say anything to the householder Anāthapiṇḍada, but gave his consent. Then the householder Anāthapiṇḍada, knowing that the Blessed One had not spoken and had given his consent, rose from his seat, bowed his head to the two feet of the Blessed One, and departed from the presence of the Blessed One. Then the Blessed One, because of this event, this basis of discussion, and this occasion, convened the community of monks, and so forth, as before. 'The Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, knowingly commit offenses,' and so forth, also as before. The Buddha, the Blessed One, rebuked Nearsay: 'Nearsay, is it true that you begged for clothes from someone who is not a householder or the wife of a householder?' 'Yes, Venerable One.' The Buddha, the Blessed One, rebuked him, saying: 'This is not the conduct of a renunciant, it is not in accordance, it is not proper, it is not in accordance with the rules. This is not something that should be done by one who has gone forth.' Then, after rebuking him in various ways, the Blessed One addressed the monks: 'Monks, therefore, seeing ten benefits, the foundation of learning should be established for the hearers in the discipline,' and so forth, as before. Um.

Thus should the disciples of the Hearers train in the Vinaya with regard to this basis: Furthermore, if any monk, having gone to the householder or the wife of the householder who is not a relative, asks for clothes, it is an offense entailing forfeiture. Thus did the Blessed One establish the basis of training for the Hearers in the Vinaya. The Vinaya Vibhanga, Thirtieth Chapter. The Buddha, the Blessed One, was dwelling in Shravasti, in the Jeta Grove, in the Garden of Anathapindika. Forty-odd monks from a town and village were traveling in the region, and were robbed by thieves. They thought to themselves: The Blessed One has established a basis of training, that if any monk, having gone to the householder or the wife of the householder who is not a relative, asks for clothes, it is an offense entailing forfeiture. Here, we have no relatives. If we go to Shravasti, then there, we will be provided with clothes by those who practice the same ব্রহ্মচर्या (brahmacarya, purity)。 They said: Should we go naked? We should go covered at night, and during the day, enter the thickets and stay, and at night, proceed on the road. Thus, they went to the Jeta Grove covered at night. Monks who, in the upper and lower parts of the night, did not sleep, but were diligent in pursuing yoga, saw them and said: Naked ones, this is not your dwelling place, nor is it a monastery. From where have you come? Venerable ones, we are not naked ones. If so, who are you? The monks said: Are there such monks? What kind are those who have been robbed by thieves? What are your names? We are forty monks from a town and village. Venerable ones, welcome! Welcome! Thus, some gave them the Sanghati, some gave them the upper robe, some gave them the lower skirt, and some gave them the rag robe. At that time, the monks reported to the Blessed One. The Blessed One said: Therefore, except for the time. Here, the time is: a monk's clothes are robbed, or clothes are lost, or clothes are burned, or clothes are carried away by the wind.
