Sixth, showing the abandonment of begging. Sixth, showing the abandonment of begging. The Buddha, the Bhagavan, was dwelling in Jeta Grove, Anathapindika's Garden, in Shravasti. In Shravasti, there lived a householder who took a wife from the same caste. He would play with her, rejoice with her, and enjoy happiness together. He said to his wife, "Good woman, I am going to another place with goods. Lady, for now, enjoy playing, rejoicing, and happiness in your youth, and accumulate wealth in your old age. Good woman, while the great elements of youth can endure cold and heat, one should strive to accumulate wealth, and in old age, one should live in comfort and enjoyment." The wife thought, "Whatever I should urge him to do, he will do himself." So she said, "Very well, sir, do as you wish." The householder gave his wife only a little food, took his goods, and went to another place. His wife thought, "My husband is afflicted by cold when it is cold, tormented by heat when it is hot, and troubled by hunger and thirst. Moreover, he takes pleasure, makes effort, and strives to manifestly accomplish the trivial tasks of avoiding the touch of mosquitoes, flies, wind, sun, and poisonous snakes. All these things he does for my sake. To live without dependence is not in accordance with my conduct." So she went to the market, bought fine cotton wool, loaded it into a fine chest, and hired a skilled weaver to weave fine cloth. Then, she dyed the cloth with various colors and made it into a fine garment. The householder also successfully completed his business, earned profit, and returned successfully. The wife bathed the householder and offered him the cloth. The householder thought, "I only left her a little food, and it is absolutely impossible to obtain this cloth with those things." Realizing this, he asked his wife, "Good woman, where did you get this cloth? Lady, please tell me." The householder put on the cloth and asked again, "Good woman, where did you get this cloth?"

Je's son, Je Wo, inquired. After he finished eating, he asked again: Virtuous woman, where did you get this fine cloth? She described the situation in detail. The householder said: Virtuous woman, that's excellent! I am practicing, and if you hide it like this, our possessions will increase, expand, and become vast for a long time. The wife said: Je's son, I obtained this with great difficulty, so don't give it to anyone. That householder had faith and was virtuous, with good intentions, so he went to Jetavana to prostrate to the feet of the Blessed One. As he was walking, the gatekeeper saw him and thought: This householder is wearing such fine cloth, it seems he must have obtained a lot of wealth. The usual behavior of the group of six monks was that none of the group of six monks would leave the gate of Jetavana empty. At that time, the Venerable Nanda was wandering at the gate of Jetavana. He saw the householder and thought: This householder is wearing such fine cloth, it seems he must have obtained a lot of wealth. If I don't rob him, I don't deserve to have the name "Nanda." So he said to the householder: Householder, welcome! Welcome! Where have you been going back and forth like the moon for so long? Venerable, I took goods to other places. Householder, did you obtain a lot of wealth? Venerable, only a little. Householder, is the lake turbid? It should be understood through the cause and condition of faith. You are wearing such fine cloth, it seems you must have obtained a lot of wealth, come here! I will teach the Dharma. The usual behavior of the group of six monks was that if they taught the precepts, the listeners would think: We will be reborn in the heavens. If they taught generosity, the listeners would think: We should also cut off our own flesh to give as alms. If they taught about the lower realms, the listeners would think: We will fall into the lower realms. That householder prostrated to the feet of the Venerable Nanda and sat in front to listen to the Dharma, and the Venerable Nanda
