It became so. When other beings also tasted the essence of the earth with the tips of their fingers, as they tasted, so they desired, and as they desired, so they saw it being eaten by a morsel of food. Having seen this, those beings also tasted the essence of the earth with the tips of their fingers. As they tasted, so they desired. As they desired, so they were eaten by a morsel of food. Because those beings ate the essence of the earth with a morsel of food, their bodies became hard and heavy, and their bright and beautiful color disappeared. Darkness also arose in the world. Monks, by nature, if darkness arises in the world, then the sun and moon will also arise in the world. Stars, nights, days, moments, instants, short periods, months, half-months, seasons, and years will also arise in the world. They eat those foods, possess those foods, and live long and endure for a long time. Among them, whoever eats the least food becomes radiant, and whoever eats the most food becomes ugly. Thus, relying on the two kinds of food, two kinds of colors appear. When two kinds of colors appear, beings say to each other, 'Hey, being, I am radiant, and you are ugly.' Thus, they disparage each other. When they become proud and arrogant because of their colors, the essence of the earth disappears because of taking up sinful, unwholesome dharmas. Monks, when those beings lose the essence of the earth, they gather together and grieve, become dejected, lament, and say, 'Alas, essence! Alas, essence!' Just as nowadays people find some delicious food and trace back the name with letters and old words, and say, 'Alas, essence!'

Just as it is also called "Alas, essence." Those beings also, when they lost the essence of the earth, gathered together and lamented, became lazy, uttered lamentations, and said, "Alas, essence! Alas, essence!" Although they said this, the meaning of what was said is this. The meaning of what was said is this, but they do not understand its meaning. Monks, from the time those beings lost the essence of the earth, food with perfect color, perfect smell, and perfect taste arose. The color was like this, for example, like a mallow flower. The taste was like this, for example, like unboiled honey from bees. They ate that food and, relying on that food, lived long and stayed for a long time. Among them, whoever ate the least food became radiant, and whoever ate the most food became ugly. Thus, relying solely on two kinds of food, two kinds of colors appeared. When they became two kinds of colors, one being said to another, "Hey, being, I am radiant, and you are ugly." Thus they belittled each other. When they became arrogant due to the appearance of color, because they truly took up those sinful, unwholesome dharmas, they lost the earth-cream. Monks, when those beings lost the earth-cream, they gathered together and lamented, became lazy, uttered lamentations, and also said, "Alas! Alas!" For example, when people today are touched by some suffering and discomfort, they also express themselves with letters and old words, and also say, "Alas! Alas!" Just like that, when those beings lost the earth-cream, they gathered together and lamented, became lazy, uttered lamentations, and also said, "Alas! Alas!" Although they said this, the meaning of what was said is this. The meaning of what was said is this, but they do not understand its meaning. Monks, when those beings lost the earth-cream, sprout clumps with perfect color arose.

The color is perfect, the taste is perfect, it has been produced. The color is like this, like the flowers of Kadambuka. The taste is like this, like the unboiled honey of bees. They eat those foods, possess those foods, live long and exist for a long time. Among them, whoever eats the least food will become colorful; whoever eats the most food will become ugly in color. In this way, relying solely on two kinds of food, two kinds of colors are manifested. After becoming two kinds of colors, beings say to beings, "Hey, beings, I am colorful, and you are ugly in color." In this way, they belittle each other. After they become arrogant people manifested by color, the sinful, unwholesome dharmas, because they have completely accepted the cause of them, the nursery is gone. Monks, when those beings have no nursery, they gather together, grieve, become discouraged, wail, and say, "Go away, go away!" Just as when people today slander with only sharp slander, they follow the naming with words and old words, and also say, "Go away, go away!" In the same way, when those beings have no nursery, they also gather together, grieve, become discouraged, wail, and say, "Go away, go away!" Although they say it, the meaning of this word is this. The meaning of this word is this, but they do not understand the meaning of what is said. Monks, when those beings have no nursery, the uncultivated and unsown rice, the grains of Salu, without chaff, without bran, clean and pure, four fingers long, not completely wrapped, when cooked at night, it swells inside and grows outside; when cooked inside, it swells at night and grows outside; when cooked, all of it grows outside; even when cooked, it does not appear, it has been produced. They eat those foods, possess those foods, live long and exist for a long time. Because those beings ate the uncultivated and unsown rice, the grains of Salu, eating with the beginning of a mouthful of food, therefore
