Explaining the basis of the firm vow. Explaining the basis of the firm vow. The summary of the basis of the firm vow is: the place of dwelling and some, broken vows and expulsion, time and the basis of female individuals, making twenty, the needs are twelve. The place of dwelling, vowing to dwell in summer. When wanting to see the teacher, being troubled by mud and mire. There, the Dharma robe was granted. The Buddha, the Bhagavan, promised to dwell in summer in the Jeta Grove of Prince Jeta, in the pleasure garden of Anathapindika. At that time, many monks vowed to dwell in summer in the place of dwelling, and after three summer months had passed, possessing Dharma robes, having obtained Dharma robes, carrying alms bowls and Dharma robes. In the dense grass and great mire, being weary from the heat, and with bodies covered in dust, they went to where Shravasti was. Gradually walking, they arrived at Shravasti. Then, many monks put down their Dharma robes and alms bowls, washed their feet, and went to where the Bhagavan was. They bowed their heads to the two feet of the Bhagavan and sat to one side. According to the Dharma, the Buddhas, the Bhagavatans, made the monks who had suddenly arrived happy in their own correct way, and in this way, they made them happy in their own correct way. Monks, where have you come from now? Where did you dwell in summer? Venerable ones, we have come from the place of dwelling, and we dwelt in summer in the place of dwelling. Monks, did you dwell in summer comfortably in the place of dwelling? Were you not troubled by alms gathering? Venerable ones, we truthfully report that we dwelt in summer comfortably in the place of dwelling, and we were not troubled by alms gathering. However, we carried alms bowls and Dharma robes, and in the dense grass and great mire, being weary from the heat, and with bodies covered in dust, we walked. Gradually walking, we arrived here with great difficulty. Vinaya Basis, Volume Sixty-Seven. The Bhagavan thought: Alas, my Shravakas, carrying alms bowls and Dharma robes, are weary from the heat in the dense grass and great mire.

became, and wandering in the fields, being covered with bodily dust, is a defilement. Mala, I should allow the monks to dwell in comfort, and to allow the almsgivers to enjoy the Dharma of alms, the monks should be allowed to stay in retreat. There are five benefits to staying in retreat in this way: it is not permissible to exceed ten days, it is not permissible to exceed one month, it is not permissible to leave at night, it is not permissible to travel with robes, lower garments, and other Dharma garments, and it is not permissible to possess as many unlawful Dharma garments as one desires. There are also five benefits: it is not permissible to gather and eat, it is not permissible to eat repeatedly, it is not permissible to go to the homes of patrons without being invited, it is permissible to seek as many Dharma garments as one desires, and those who stay in retreat from the middle of autumn to the beginning of spring think that this is their gain. Therefore, the Blessed One said to the monks: Monks, therefore I allow, in order for the monks to dwell in comfort, and in order for the almsgivers to enjoy the Dharma of alms, the monks who stay in summer retreat should stay in retreat. There are five benefits to staying in retreat in this way: it is not permissible to exceed ten days, etc., until the gains of those who stay in retreat, as mentioned above. When the Blessed One said that one should stay in retreat, the monks did not know how to stay in retreat. The Blessed One said: One should stay in retreat from whatever is gained from the Dharma garments of the Sangha who stay in summer retreat. Staying in retreat should be done as follows: first, one should reach a consensus, this Dharma garment is the gain of the Dharma garments of the Sangha who stay in summer retreat, and if the Sangha agrees, then this Dharma garment should be used to stay in retreat for the Sangha. Then, the next day, after arranging the dwelling, strike the ghanta and admonish the monks with words of inquiry, and after all the Sangha have gathered and united, one monk should make a request and then act. Venerable Sangha, please listen, this Dharma garment is the Dharma of the Sangha who stay in summer retreat.
