It is only a matter of quantity, only a matter of assembly. Great King, furthermore, listen to what I have done to benefit sentient beings in order to seek the unsurpassed, perfectly complete, and fully awakened enlightenment. Great King, in the past, not far from the city of Varanasi, there lived a loving sage, who was compassionate and full of love for sentient beings. Not far from his dwelling, there were two farmer householders who were plowing the fields, and the two of them started arguing with each other. There, one got angry, and the other also got angry in return. One hit, and the other also hit back. Both of them went to the sage and sought a judgment from the sage, one insisted on his own claim, and the other also insisted on his own claim. The two of them then went to the king, and the king said to them: Who do you two listen to? One said: God, I listen to the sage. The other said: I also listen to him. Then the king summoned the sage and asked: Great sage, who was at fault first between these two? The sage said: God, if the law of the Wheel-Turning King can make a judgment, then I can make a decision, otherwise I cannot. The king said: Let it be so. Then the sage said: God, one got angry, and the other also got angry in return. One hit, and the other also hit back. The king said: Then punish both of them equally. The sage said: God, didn't I tell you that if the law of the Wheel-Turning King can make a judgment, then I can make a decision, otherwise I cannot? The king said: Great sage, what is the judgment of the Wheel-Turning King? The sage said: God, the Wheel-Turning King prevents harmful things and does beneficial things. Then the king said: Both of you, from today onwards, do not do such things again. Great King, at that time, the sage who acted according to the Dharma, do not think that it was someone else, but it was me, at that time, from "me" onwards, it is me.

The empowerment of Dharma, do it like that, as mentioned before. Great King, if I think that by doing the empowerment of Dharma, I have realized the unsurpassed, perfectly complete enlightenment, you should not think like that. However, the empowerment of Dharma, from that unsurpassed, perfectly complete enlightenment, to just being a collection of resources, is as mentioned before. Great King, furthermore, for the sake of seeking the unsurpassed, perfectly complete enlightenment, when I was dwelling in an uncertain aggregate body, having completely given up my own life and taken many sentient beings under my care, what was that? Great King, in the past, in a dense forest, there lived a lion with a mane. From that road, about five hundred merchants were passing by. The noise of those people startled a great snake called Rope, who suddenly rose up and coiled around those merchants, including the merchant leader. They were frightened and made sounds, praying for peace, praying to the water gods, evil spirits, and gods like Ishvara. Then, the lion heard that sound. Having heard it, it also came to that direction. After a while, it saw a great snake called Rope coiling around about five hundred merchants. Not far from there, there was also a baby elephant wandering around. It went to the baby elephant and said: Friend, the great snake called Rope has coiled around five hundred merchants, are you willing to give up your own life for their benefit? How to do it? I will put my foot on your head and slap the great snake with my paw, the force of my foot will cause you to die. The slap of the paw will hit the snake. The saliva of the great snake touching me will also cause me to die. The baby elephant agreed: Let it be done like that. The lion put its foot on the baby elephant and slapped the great snake with its paw. The force of the lion's foot caused the baby elephant to die, and the slap of the paw also caused the great snake to die. The saliva of the great snake also caused the king of beasts, the lion, to die, and all three beings died. The merchants

The retinue and a deity said: "The Bodhisattva of the Fortunate Aeon, having completely given up his life for you and protected you, now, for a while, make offerings to his body and then depart." Then they burned his bones and made offerings to the bones. Great King, at that time, in that era, the king of beasts named Lion, from "I gave up my life and liberated those five hundred like-minded ones from the great serpent," it is as before. Great King, if I think that by subduing sentient beings, I have attained the unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment, you should not view it that way, from "I have subdued sentient beings" to "it is merely the cause, merely the condition, and merely the collection for the unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment," it is as before. Great King, furthermore, listen to how I cultivated loving-kindness even towards killing for the sake of seeking the unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. Great King, in the past, in a certain forest, the Bodhisattva, dwelling in an uncertain body, transformed into a bird with two heads but different minds. One of them was called 'Dharmic,' and the other was called 'Non-Dharmic.' After some time, the 'Dharmic' one ate a fruit of nectar. The 'Non-Dharmic' one ate a poisonous fruit, and as a result, both became completely intoxicated by the power of the poison and began to quarrel with each other. One made a perverse aspiration: 'In whatever existence you are born, may you become a killer, an opponent, and an enemy!' The other one also said: 'May I always have a mind of loving-kindness, a mind of benefit, and a mind of compassion towards you.' Great King, what do you think? The 'Dharmic' one at that time was none other than myself. The 'Non-Dharmic' one was Devadatta. Great King, if you think that my mind of loving-kindness has attained the unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment, you should not view it that way. However, my mind of loving-kindness is merely the cause, merely the condition, and merely the collection for the unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment.
