That's all. Vinaya-vastu, Volume 48. Great King, furthermore, listen to what I have done to protect sentient beings in order to seek the unsurpassed, perfectly complete, and fully awakened Bodhi. Great King, in the past, on the shore of a certain water island, the Bodhisattva, dwelling in an uncertain body, was born among the crocodiles and became the leader of five hundred crocodiles. After some time, an old crocodile cunningly ate the eggs and young of those crocodiles, and then slowly, slowly crawled around, and sometimes when there was nothing to do, he would curl up one leg and squat. Then, those crocodiles, tormented by the suffering of being separated from their children, went to the leader and began to cry in their native language. Then, the leader, seeing his own kind suffering in this way, began to patrol the entire water island. According to the Dharma, Bodhisattvas fall with their bodies, but not with their minds. He saw that old crocodile slowly, slowly crawling, going to one side, and standing with one leg raised. The Bodhisattva thought, "This pretender is an evil person who fights for his own kind," and then said in verse: My eggs and young, And even the bones have been eaten by you, The one who stands there with one leg, Alas, is that your ascetic practice? Some people speak the truth, Moving their feet slowly, Speaking slowly, slowly, The way they twist their necks, That is the characteristic of a deceitful person. The crocodile thought, "This leader knows my secret," and then went to take refuge in him. Then, the leader said, "Until the crocodile group is not disturbed, be at ease." After that, the old crocodile fled, and those crocodiles were at peace. Great King, if you think that the crocodile leader at that time was someone else, you should not think that way, but rather that I myself became the crocodile leader at that time.
