Carrying sticks, he came and blew the conch. The ears of those people burst, and they fled. The king's daughter thought: This young man named Kusha has great diligence and the power to overcome others, why should I not like him? So, she developed affection for him and said to the king: Please fulfill what you have promised. Son, I give you to Kusha. She said: Father, that young man named Kusha is this person. Son, if that is so, then go. So, he gave him four divisions of the army and sent him off with great respect. He went to that mountain cave and said to those people: Wise ones, please give me half of the four divisions of the army. Those people said: Young man, the otter who came carrying four divisions of the army came like this. Not long after, some sheep passed by, and the young Kusha said in verse: A sixty-year-old bull, wherever the elephant is taken, there the cows and sheep are taken, one can know by inference. Vinaya-vastu, Volume Forty-three. If you give it temporarily, then it is good. If you do not give it, I will resort to threats. Those people gave it to him, and he placed him near a river, and entered the water to bathe slowly. There, he saw the reflection of his face and thought: I have eighteen bad signs, and my face is like a lion's face. It is for this reason that the king's daughter does not like me. What is the use of someone like me living, I would rather die. So, he entered a dense place and began to kill himself. The lord of the gods, Indra, thought: This is a Bodhisattva of the Fortunate Aeon, and he is going to kill himself because he does not have a good appearance. I will fulfill his wish. So, Indra said: Young man, do not despair. Do not kill yourself, put this crest jewel on your head and your wish will be fulfilled. Having said this, he left. The young Kusha began to enter the house, and the gatekeeper said: This is the palace of the young Kusha.

Please do not enter, thus he stopped him. He said: Kusa is me. He did not believe it, so he took off the jewel from his head, and having become as before, he believed it. The youth Kusa thought: I will stay here, so he also informed his father. He sent a message saying: I am here. The lord of the gods, Indra, showed him the source of the four treasures. He had that city made of four kinds of precious jewels. Because the youth Kusa lived there, it was known as Kusavati. He became a powerful wheel-turning king named Kusa. He built places for offering and giving in sixty thousand cities. For many years, many hundreds of years, many thousands of years, and many hundreds of thousands of years, he gave alms to the Brahmins. Seeing his own perfect offering and giving, he said in verses: Among gods and men, having seen my wealth, who would not give this perfect gift? Who, suppressing hundreds of thousands of men, conquering the enemy of miserliness, gives out of fear of the next world, I think of myself as the bravest of the brave. Whoever takes up weapons in hand and enters the battlefield, the wise ones say that is not a hero. Those who give without fear, the all-knowing ones say those are heroes. The great king at that time became the powerful wheel-turning king Kusa, who gave alms to sixty thousand cities and did meritorious deeds. If you think that was someone else, do not look at it that way. However, I myself at that time became the powerful wheel-turning king Kusa. There I built places for offering and giving in sixty thousand cities, and I gave alms and did meritorious deeds. If you think that the great king's, my, giving or distribution of giving will lead to the attainment of unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment, do not look at it that way. However, my giving is only a cause for unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment.

It is merely a matter of conditions and circumstances. The monks, having doubts, inquired of the Blessed One Buddha in order to dispel all doubts. Venerable King Kusa, what deeds did he commit that resulted in the maturation of that karma? He possesses eighteen unsightly features, yet he is wealthy, with abundant riches, and born into a lineage of great enjoyment. The Blessed One replied: Monks, Kusa himself, through the accumulation of karma, completely transformed the conditions, abiding like a radiant light, performing and accumulating deeds that are not devoured by demons. Monks, how could others individually experience the deeds done and accumulated by Kusa himself? Monks, the deeds done and accumulated will not mature in the external realm of earth, nor will they mature in the realm of water, nor will they mature in the realm of fire, nor will they mature in the realm of wind. Rather, the virtuous and non-virtuous deeds done and accumulated will mature in the appropriated aggregates, realms, and sources. Deeds, even after hundreds of thousands of eons, will not be exhausted; once conditions and time are met, they will become fruits for sentient beings. Monks, in the past, in another place called Riwo, there lived a householder. He took a great deal of food and drink and went to a garden. In the absence of the Blessed One Buddha, self-enlightened beings, compassionate towards the inferior and the wicked, delighting in remote dwellings, the sole objects of offerings in the world, will arise. Then, a solitary Buddha, while wandering, went to that garden. The householder saw him and instructed those who lived on leftovers: Wise ones, drive away this renunciate! When they were unable to drive him away, the householder himself stood up, seized him, and drove him away, saying: Lion-faced one, possessing eighteen evil marks, where are you going? That solitary Buddha thought: It would not be good if this affliction were to be permanently disparaged and harmed. Therefore, beginning with what is called the "sky above" and extending to "he honored and did," he elaborated in detail until his feet touched the ground, and then he made the aspiration: Whatever harsh words I have uttered towards such a supreme object of offering,
