Section of the Grove of Light Section of the Grove of Light Summary: Odma (藏文, 梵文天城体, 梵文罗马拟音, 汉语字面意思) and the central village, Mithila, and Lusheng, Sala Tranpa, Evil Abandoned Son, Turmeric Crest Jewel, Praised One, Black Forest and Sinner, the city of Kusha is the last. Then, the Blessed One said to the Venerable Ananda: Ananda, where are you going to the village of light? The monks replied: As the Venerable One teaches. The Venerable Ananda listened to the teachings of the Blessed One. After that, the Blessed One departed from the Abandoned Land, traveled around, and arrived at the village of light. He stayed in the grove of Sal trees in the northern part of the village of light. At that time, there was a terrible famine, and it was difficult for beggars to find food. Then, the Blessed One said to the monks: Monks, now there is a terrible famine here, and it is difficult for beggars to find food. Monks, among you, who can ask each other, who can talk, who can be companions, those should spend the summer retreat in the abandoned village near the city of Guangyan. I can also spend the summer retreat in this village of light with the attendant monk Ananda, so that everyone will not suffer from begging for alms, right? The monks replied: As the Venerable One teaches. Those monks listened to the teachings of the Blessed One, those who could ask each other, could talk, could be companions, spent the summer retreat in the abandoned village near the city of Guangyan. The Blessed One also spent the summer retreat in this village of light with the attendant monk Ananda. In that summer retreat place, the Blessed One suffered from a serious illness, unbearable pain, and the condition was so severe that he was on the verge of death. Then, the Blessed One thought: I am suffering from a serious illness, unbearable pain, and the condition is so severe that I am on the verge of death, and if the monastic community of monks also dissolves because of this, if the monastic community of monks dissolves, then it is not my duty to enter into Nirvana. Therefore, I should strive to overcome this pain.

Bound by diligence. Without attending to any signs, one should abide having manifestly accomplished the signless samadhi of the mind with the body. Thus he contemplated. Then, the Blessed One, again binding that one feeling with diligence, not attending to any signs, manifestly accomplished the signless samadhi of the mind with the body and remained. Then, the Blessed One became more engaged in conduct and more engaged in life. Then, the venerable Ānanda, having risen from the correct placement within contemplation, went to where the Blessed One was, and having arrived, bowed to the two feet of the Blessed One with his head, and sat to one side. Having sat to one side, the venerable Ānanda said this to the Blessed One: "Venerable Blessed One, your illness is severe, unbearable, violent, near death, suddenly afflicted, my body is like being poisoned, and the directions are also confused. The Dharma that I have heard has also been forgotten. Therefore, I hope that the Blessed One will not completely pass into nirvana until you have given some last instructions for the sake of the Sangha of monks." Ānanda, whoever thinks, 'The Sangha of monks is mine, I will teach the Sangha of monks, I will guide the Sangha of monks,' that one will indeed speak some last instructions for the sake of the Sangha of monks. Ānanda, I do not think, 'The Sangha of monks is mine, I will teach the Sangha of monks, I will guide the Sangha of monks.' Why should I give any last instructions for the sake of the Sangha of monks? Furthermore, Ānanda, what reliance do I have on the Sangha of monks? Ānanda, the Dharma that I have always practiced, namely, the four mindfulnesses, the four correct abandonments, the four legs of magical power, the five faculties, the five powers, the seven branches of enlightenment, and the eight branches of the noble path, have already been explained.
