Thus have I heard. At one time, the Blessed One was dwelling in the great grove of the city of Vaishali, in a house with layered rooms, together with a great Sangha of eight thousand monks, and a great multitude of Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas. At that time, after these three months had passed, the Tathagata would completely pass into Nirvana. The Blessed One, with mindfulness and awareness, relinquished the aggregates of life. Then, the Blessed One addressed the venerable great Maudgalyayana's son, saying: Great Maudgalyayana's son, go and gather all the monks who dwell in the thousand world realms into this layered house in the great grove. Then, the venerable great Maudgalyayana's son replied to the Blessed One, saying: Thus it is, O Blessed One. Having listened to the Blessed One's command, in that very instant, by the power of his own miraculous abilities, he sat on the summit of Mount Meru, making the thousand world realms hear his voice: Disciples of the Sugata and sentient beings, all who dwell in this world realm, listen. The venerable Shariputra, having manifested such miraculous power, by manifesting that miraculous power, in the realm of the three-thousand great-thousand world-system, whether they were adherents of the Hearer Vehicle, or adherents of the Solitary Buddha Vehicle, or even of the Great Vehicle, all the monks who dwelt there gathered in the great grove's tiered pavilion. Having arrived, they saw the Blessed One, bowed their heads at the feet of the Blessed One, circumambulated the Blessed One three times, and sat down in one place.
