Thus have I heard: At one time, the Blessed One was dwelling in the banyan grove in Kapilavastu (present-day Nepal), in the land of the Shakyas (6th century BCE - 5th century CE). At that time, a young man possessed by Rahu was lying down, having been frightened by a Rakshasa. Then, after the night had passed, that young man possessed by Rahu, surrounded by many young men, came from Kapilavastu and went to where the Blessed One was. Having arrived, he bowed his head at the feet of the Blessed One and sat before him, weeping. Then, the Blessed One said to the venerable Ānanda: Ānanda, for the sake of protecting the young man possessed by Rahu, recite and hold this knowledge-mantra called Mekhala. Hosts of gods, hosts of nāgas, hosts of yakshas, hosts of rakshasas, hosts of asuras, hosts of garudas, hosts of kinnaras, hosts of mahoragas, hosts of flesh-eaters, hosts of..., hosts of kumbhāṇḍas, hosts of piśācas, hosts of planets, hosts of stars, twenty-eight yaksha generals, the four great kings, ascetics free from desire, those dwelling in the snowy mountains, all beings dwelling in the ten directions, hosts of sisters, Bāli, Kāṭalidī, Bodarī, Grongraṇā, Idi, the great harītī, and all the hosts of mamos, listen to me. The guardians of the ocean's retinue, in the eastern direction is the rākṣasī named Harītī, in the southern direction is the rākṣasī named Glang Sna Ma, in the western direction is the rākṣasī named Ralpa Can, and in the northern direction is the rākṣasī named Sa'i Tsug. Whoever has sinful deeds, steals glory, dwells on the earth, all those, having heard the knowledge mantra of Mekhala, become greatly frightened and go to all directions and intermediate directions. Ananda, having well held the knowledge mantra of Mekhala, make protection for twelve yojanas in all directions. Make complete protection, complete acceptance, complete accomplishment, peace, and well-being. Homage to the Buddha. Abandon faults, abandon weapons, destroy poisons, repel the unfriendly, make boundaries, bind with thread, repel all hatred, do not frighten those who commit sins, both human and non-human. Homage to the Buddha. May the basis of all secret mantras be accomplished, Svaha. (Tibetan: སྭཱ་ཧཱ།, Sanskrit Devanagari: स्वाहा, Sanskrit Romanization: svāhā, Chinese literal meaning: Well said). The ritual for that is, homage to the Tathagata, offer flowers and incense, and then bind with thread. Make offerings, apply perfume, and bathe well. With this ritual, repel all demons.
