Therefore, faith is very important. In the Extensive Play Sutra, it is said: \"Ananda, cultivate faith! In the Jewel Cloud Dharani, it is said: \"If one has faith in the Buddha and the Buddha's Dharma, has faith in the conduct of the Buddha's sons, and has faith in the unsurpassed enlightenment, the mind of a great person will arise.\" Therefore, having pure faith in the lineage of the guru is the faith of wanting to attain the enlightenment of the Buddha." } ] ============================================================

Pa! Have faith and trust in the Dharma. No matter what obstacles arise in the practice of Dharma, have unwavering faith in the Dharma. There are great benefits to be gained from merely listening to the Dharma. In the past, when the Venerable Upagupta was teaching the Dharma, a dog heard the sound, which lessened its obscurations, and immediately after death, it was reborn as a deity in the Paranirmitavasavartin heaven. In India, when a monk was reciting the Abhidharma, a partridge bird heard the sound, which lessened its obscurations, and immediately after death, it obtained a human body. After becoming a monk, he remembered the Abhidharma without having to memorize it. When a monk was teaching the Dharma in the sky, a frog heard the sound, which lessened its obscurations, and immediately after death, it was reborn as a deity in the Trayastrimsa heaven. There are also such stories. The Bhagavan said, "Through hearing, one knows the Dharma; through hearing, one turns away from sin; through hearing, one abandons what is meaningless; through hearing, one attains Nirvana." Therefore, please listen to the Dharma with sincere reverence. Furthermore, in this scripture it says, "A beggar is not suitable to teach the Dharma, but I will speak some Dharma." This indicates the characteristics of a lama. In the Vajra Dakini Tantra, it says, "One who is wrathful and hairy, whose speech is very harsh, and who is content with qualities, do not rely on him as a lama." Therefore, it is necessary to examine the lama. In the Fifty Verses on the Guru, it says, "If the lama and the disciple equally violate their vows, the hero should first examine the relationship between the guru and the disciple." So, what are the characteristics of a guru? In the Vajra Tent Tantra, it says, "The Vajra Guru possesses five characteristics. His close teachings are praised. The practitioner gains accomplishments. He possesses the teachings and profound Dharma, and is skilled in all fields of knowledge. He knows fire pujas, mandalas, and mantras. He has mastered the torma of Hevajra. He understands those ten things. He upholds the conduct of the Shravakas, and reveres the Mantrayana step by step. He is delighted to see those with form, and is skilled in drawing mandalas and reciting. He completely destroys the root downfalls, and through the union of mantra and tantra, he gives happiness to sentient beings. If such a lama truly exists, I will not criticize him." The Four Seats Tantra says, "Having the appearance of being tamed and peaceful, sentient beings"
