Having taken refuge in the Three Jewels, having vowed to be a lay devotee, one should protect these three refuges. One should not offer or prostrate with reverence to those with external symbols. The Root Sutra says: Do not prostrate to other gods, do not make offerings, do not show respect. After going to a place, stand visibly and recite verses from the scriptures, thereby benefiting them. The Sutra Requested by the Lord of the Gods says: Those who trade for profit and deceive for fame, those who perform acts of cutting and purification, will go to the hells such as Avici like an arrow shot by a man. Also, in the six-limbed refuge: One should regard the image verse and the yellow patched robe with faith and longing as the teacher. For all that is spoken from the mouth of the Buddha, one should not slander, but take it on the crown of one's head. One should regard both pure and impure individuals as sacred. The Sutra says: Merely holding a small piece of cloth, if one does not generate the thought of it being the teacher, but instead hates and reveals its faults, then one does not belong to my retinue. Also, the Letter to a Friend says: Just as the body of the Sugata, even if made of wood, whatever it may be, the wise should offer to it. Also, the Collection of Special Topics says: Adorned with the reddish-brown robes of the Buddha, even Brahma and Indra, the great beings of the world, take it high on the crest of their head, and place it in a place of offering. Also, formerly the Elephant King saw a hunter wearing reddish-brown robes and said: These who wear the reddish-brown robes of the Dharma, are those who liberate from the ocean of samsara. Protect with reverence. The Teacher also said: Even if a champaka flower is old, it is not inferior to other flowers. Even if my monk violates the precepts, he is not inferior to ordinary people. Thus it is said. The Essence of Earth Sutra says: Formerly, a man who had violated the king's law was abandoned in a cemetery, and a piece of a Dharma robe was found tied around his neck. A demon saw it and said: This piece that you wear around your neck is the banner robe of a great ascetic. We should offer and prostrate to it. Thus it is said. From the Collection of

It is also like that. It should also be associated with Dharma and Sangha. As it is said in the Karuṇāpuṇḍarīka-sūtra: Ānanda, if someone focuses on the Buddha and even scatters a flower into the sky, Ānanda, I say that this root of virtue will obtain the fruit of nirvāṇa, and ultimately attain nirvāṇa. Thus, the benefits of taking refuge and keeping the vows of refuge are: The benefits of taking refuge are widely taught in the scriptures. Atiśa summarized them into eight points: The benefit of becoming an inner Buddhist is that it becomes the basis of all vows; it will not be harmed by humans and non-humans; all sins and obscurations will be purified and reduced; it is said in the tantras that a great collection of merit will be accumulated and increased; after death, one will not fall into evil realms and evil paths; a particularly excellent path will arise in the continuum; and finally, there are eight benefits of attaining unsurpassed enlightenment. Furthermore, as it is said in the Sūryagarbha-sūtra: Whoever among sentient beings takes refuge in the Buddha, countless demons cannot harm him, even if his discipline has been destroyed and his mind has been disturbed, he will surely cross to the other shore of existence. Furthermore, as it is said in the Vīradatta-paripṛcchā: If the merit of taking refuge had a form, this three-thousandfold world would be too small to contain it. Even if the great ocean were a treasure of water, it would not be exhausted by pouring and measuring it. Thus it is said. In the Jātaka of the Sow: Whoever takes refuge in the Buddha, he will not go to evil realms, and even after abandoning the body of a god, he will be born in the body of a god. It should also be said in connection with Dharma and Sangha. Furthermore, as it is said in the sūtra: Just as a pile of dry grass as large as Mount Meru can be burned by a small spark, so if one takes refuge in the Three Jewels, even sins as large as Mount Meru can be purified. Furthermore, as it is said in the Abhisamayālaṃkāra: If a Bodhisattva enjoys the five objects of desire, he also takes refuge in the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha. If he thinks of practicing Buddhahood and aspires to omniscience, the wise should know that he abides in the perfection of discipline. Furthermore, as it is said in the sūtra: Just as the sky has no end, and there is no limit to measuring it with a span, so the qualities and sins of those who rely on the Three Jewels cannot be fathomed.
