Thus, in the protection of the Three Jewels, faith is necessary. As stated in the Sutra of Ten Dharmas: 'For those without faith, white dharmas do not arise, just as when seeds are burned by fire, green sprouts do not grow.' So it is said. In the Avatamsaka Sutra, it is also said: 'Those dwelling in samsara with little faith cannot understand the enlightenment of the Buddha.' So it is said. Therefore, faith should be cultivated. In the Noble Extensive Play Sutra, it is also said: 'Ananda, engage in faith! This is the exhortation of the Tathagata.' So it is said. There are three types of faith: faith of aspiration towards the Buddha, faith of trust in the Dharma, and faith of pure intention towards the Sangha. As stated in the Abhidharma-kosa: 'What is faith? It is complete trust in karma and its results, truth, and the Three Jewels, as well as aspiration and purity of mind.' So it is said. If there is no faith in the Three Jewels, in this life one is like a dead corpse, and in the next life there is no way to escape from the lower realms. As stated in the Noble Sutra of Protecting the Country: 'Those who have no faith in the Buddha, nor faith in the Dharma and the Sangha, nor faith in discipline and learning, with sinful minds turned towards the three lower realms, will, after dying from this human existence, become ignorant and foolish due to the power of karma, and find suffering in hell, or among the animals, or in the realm of the pretas.' And in the Remembrance Sutra: 'Those separated from the Buddha, living is considered not living. Those separated from the Dharma, living is considered not living. Those who transgress against the Sangha, living is considered not living.' So it is said. Therefore, if abandoning the Three Jewels, even if offered great rewards such as a kingdom, one should not abandon them. Great harm has been done in the past, and it is still being done now. Even if killing an enemy would lead to victory, if vows are broken, it is contrary to the Dharma, so one should not kill. Even if a powerful king says that if one does not abandon the Three Jewels, one will be punished, one should not abandon them. Even if a great scholar, a pandita, tells many stories of the Three Jewels and the Dharma being untrue, if one's mind is not disturbed, then one is a person of faith. As stated in the Ratnavali: 'Whatever desire, hatred, fear, or ignorance does not transgress the Dharma, that is faith.'

It is called having. It is indeed an excellent and supreme vessel. Thus it was said. Orgyen Rinpoche said: If you do not entrust your mind to wisdom, the blessings of the Three Jewels are far away. Let your mind have firm faith in wisdom. Entrust your mind to the Three Jewels. Thus it was said. Rongton Chenpo Sheja Kunrig said: Faith is very important for entering the Dharma. Faith is needed as a basis for liberation. The foundation of qualities is also made by faith. The companion of diligence is also made by faith. The treasury of wisdom is also made by faith. The vessel of secret instructions is also made by faith. Without faith, no qualities of the white side will arise. If you encounter the Dharma but have no faith, it is useless to sit in the Dharma like a wooden person. It is like a farmer without land. It is like a traveler without a boat. It is like a sprout with rotten seeds. It is like going to the golden island empty-handed. It is like a corpse that has not stopped breathing. It is like a prayer without carrying the mixture. It is like a stray animal whose four limbs do not touch the ground. It is like a blind person looking with wide eyes. It is like a deaf person listening with erect ears. A man without faith is like a yak with hair growing on it. A woman without faith is like a cow being regarded as property. A young person without faith is like a poisonous flower. An old person without faith is like a gravedigger in the dark. In general, this faith arises from accumulating merit, so it is difficult for it to arise in everyone. The faith urged by circumstances is the realm of activity of a few fortunate individuals. Thus it was said. As for the refuge vows of the common vehicle: it is not very related to this guidance, so it is okay not to obtain it. If you want to request it, do it as explained separately. As for the Mahayana refuge vows: it is enough to obtain them along with empowerment and bodhicitta. If you want to expand it, you need the support of the Three Jewels, the arrangement of offerings, and the three sessions of preliminary, main, and concluding practices, which take three days. If you like, do it as explained separately. There are also various kinds of refuge recitations, including extensive, concise, and medium ones. If you have them in mind and like to elaborate, you can recite them as you know them. If you do not like to elaborate and do not have them in mind, do not learn new ones, etc. This time is not for learning. It is for requesting meditation sessions. Because you are sitting and holding on to the chapter of listening, you cannot grasp the meditation. This time, meditating is very important. Refuge object meditation
