In this practice, there are many different kinds. Now, because it is closely related to this Dharma, it should be practiced according to the tradition of the great accomplished Mitra Joki. That is, the reason why wisdom beings do not need to be invited to this refuge is because the sky is filled with the body, speech, and mind of the Buddha. It is said in the scriptures: 'Whoever remembers the Buddha, the Tathagata dwells before him.' The object of visualization is: In the sky in front, on a vast and wide precious throne, supported by giants and lions, above which is a lotus seat composed of various lotuses, and on top of the lotus seat is a fully expanded lunar disc. In the center of the lunar disc, one's own root guru, Amitabha, abides in the form of the complete enjoyment body, surrounded by the Kagyu lineage gurus. In front is the yidam, Great Compassionate Avalokiteshvara, surrounded by a sea of yidams. To the right is Buddha Shakyamuni, surrounded by a sea of Buddhas, including the thousand Buddhas of the Fortunate Aeon. Behind is the Great Mother Prajnaparamita, surrounded by a sea of scriptures and texts of the Dharma. To the left is Vajrapani, surrounded by the eight close sons of the bodhisattvas and the eight supreme shravakas, as well as the sangha of the Mahayana and Hinayana, and all directions and corners are filled with heroes and dakinis. Below are the four-armed, six-armed, and tent protectors, as well as Lhamo, masters and servants, and Drak Lha Gonpo, etc., surrounded by a sea of Dharma protectors, abiding in a protective manner. Meditate that oneself and all limitless sentient beings are included in their protection. According to the tradition of Mahamudra, transform the words of the 'Four Lines of Manam' into refuge vows. If one can accomplish a thousand or a hundred prostrations, there is the key to pacifying obstacles, purifying obscurations, and easily generating realization. If it is difficult to grasp such an extensive visualization, then in the sky in front, on a precious throne, lotus, and moon cushion, visualize Amitabha Buddha, inseparable from the root guru, with a red body, wearing the three Dharma robes, abiding in the vajra posture, holding a begging bowl with the mudra of equipoise, smiling, with a white urna hair between his eyebrows, gazing at me with peaceful eyes. Know that his body is the totality of the sangha, his speech is the totality of the Dharma, his mind is the totality of the Buddhas, his qualities are the totality of the yidams, and his activity is the Dharma protectors.

Meditate on everything gathered together, and with the firm conviction of knowing what to do in this life, the next life, and the bardo, take refuge in the Guru, the Three Jewels. Recite this phrase about a hundred times. Then, whichever refuge field you meditate on, whether elaborate or concise, dissolves into light and merges into yourself. Meditate that your own body, speech, and mind are inseparably mixed with the body, speech, and mind of the refuge field. When the mind of the meditator is viewed in this way, its essence is emptiness, its nature is luminosity, and its compassion is unceasing, manifesting everything. This is the ultimate refuge. As Machig Labdrön said, "My own mind is emptiness, I take refuge in the Dharmakaya." Padmasambhava said, "From the beginning, emptiness is free from elaboration. In the state of non-elaboration, free from elaboration, uncompounded, I take refuge. Essence, nature, and compassion are pure from the beginning. In the nature of the vast expanse of equality and completion, I take refuge in the unapprehended, self-luminous nakedness." In the Ornament of Liberation, it says, "All phenomena are without self from the beginning, and do not exist in any essence. Therefore, the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha should also be seen in the same way. This is the inexhaustible refuge, the permanent refuge, the unchanging refuge." The Sutra Requested by Anavatapta also says, "What is it to take refuge with a mind free from defilements? Knowing that all phenomena are empty, not form, not sign, not dharma, truly seeing the Buddha is taking refuge in the Buddha. Seeing all phenomena following the dharmadhatu is taking refuge in the Dharma. Seeing the compounded and the uncompounded as inseparable is taking refuge in the Sangha." It is also said in the tantras that "One's own mind is the supreme refuge." Therefore, those of you who have received the instructions should practice in this way. Newcomers should also meditate on the refuge field, recite the refuge a hundred times, dissolve the refuge field into themselves, and look at the mind many times. That is sufficient. The Dharma session on refuge is complete. Arranged and published by the Nangchen Zochi Culture Mantra Dharma Development Ling Ancient Book Restoration Room.
