Now, one's own five endowments are complete, as it is said: "Born as a human in the central land, with complete faculties, not engaging in wrong livelihood, and having faith in the Dharma." The other five endowments are: For many hundreds of thousands of kalpas, there are dark kalpas when Buddhas do not appear. Now, in this auspicious light kalpa, a thousand Buddhas will appear. Among them, the compassionate Shakyamuni Buddha appeared. Although many tens of thousands of solitary realizers appear, they do not teach the Dharma. Now, the Thubpa (Shakyamuni) turned the wheel of Dharma three times. Previously, after the passing of Kashyapa Buddha, the teachings declined after seven 'zhig' (eras), but the teachings of Thubpa will remain for ten five-hundreds. According to the Kalachakra system, we are now in the fifth five-hundred. Although at the end of the teachings, monasteries and scriptures remain, it is said that no one enters the Dharma. However, many still enter the Dharma. Many also teach the Dharma to others with altruistic intent. Therefore, the other five endowments are complete, as it is said: "The appearance of a Buddha in the world, the teaching of the sacred Dharma, the abiding of the teachings, following the teachings, and having compassion for others." The meaning of these is explained by Nagarjuna in his "Letter to a Friend": Holding wrong views, being an animal, being a hungry ghost, being born in hell, being without the teachings of the Victorious Ones, being in a border region, being born as a barbarian, being foolish and mute, and being a long-lived god—any of these are called the eight conditions of unfreedom. Having separated from these and attained freedom, strive to reverse birth. And, from the Sutra: In this time of obtaining a precious human body, one has the power to speak, think, and decide. Wherever others are born, they are distracted by unfreedom and wrong livelihood. In this time of having the power to speak, think, and decide, either completely cut off samsara or increase samsara. This very moment is when one has control over oneself. In both the Inconceivable Sutra and the Compendium of Trainings, it is said: The Buddha appears and teaches the Dharma, the teachings abide and there are followers, and there is compassion for others. Like this, this precious human body endowed with the eighteen freedoms and advantages is only for this time. It is difficult to obtain again and again, as it says in the Bodhicharyavatara: Free...
