In the past, towards the end of the teachings of Buddha Dipamkara, two Brahmins observed a single day of fasting. One of them prayed to be reborn as a king, and he was indeed reborn as a king. The other prayed to be reborn as a god, but that night his wife ate all the food, leaving none for him, so he was reborn as a Naga. That king had a servant who guarded the fruit tree garden. He found a very large and sweet fruit in the spring and offered it to the king's gatekeeper. The gatekeeper offered it to the queen, who offered it to the king. The king questioned the origin of the fruit and said, "The one who found this fruit must offer many more like it! If not, he will be killed!" The man cried and sat by the spring. The Naga transformed into a human and asked what was wrong. The man told him the story. The Naga then gathered a basket full of fruit and said to the king, "You and I were friends. You were reborn as a king because you observed a pure fast. I was reborn as a Naga because I was impure. Give me a copy of the eight-branch fasting vows. If you don't give it, I will turn this country into a lake and destroy it." The king sent messengers to search, but the teachings were declining, and no copy could be found. The king then ordered his ministers to search, saying, "If you don't find it, you will be killed!" The minister asked an old father, who said, "Pay attention, this pillar in the house always emits light." The minister split open the pillar and found inside the Sutra of the Twelve Links of Dependent Arising and a copy of the Eight Precepts for One Day and One Night. The king put it in a golden box and sent it to the Naga. The Naga was very happy and offered many jewels to the king. Both the Naga and the king observed the fasting vows and encouraged others to do so as well, so they were both reborn as gods. They came to see Shakyamuni Buddha, listened to the Dharma, and attained the fruit of Stream-entry. The Buddha prophesied that they would never fall into the lower realms, would experience the happiness of gods and humans, and would ultimately attain Nirvana. The chapter on universally behaving by observing moral discipline, the third chapter, is complete. In the past, countless eons ago, King Pure Giving, along with his retinue, went to a pleasure garden. He spared the life of that slave and made him a servant instead. Later, he renounced and became a Pratyekabuddha, and a minister offered him hospitality and made prayers. As a result, the minister was born in all his lifetimes in the bodies of gods and humans of high caste, wealthy, and long-lived, surpassing other bodies by a hundred thousand times. Later, the minister was reborn as the son of a wealthy but childless minister, and his father did not allow him to renounce. He thought that if he were born in a low caste, he would be allowed to renounce, so he jumped off a high rock, but was not harmed. He sank into the water, but was not carried away. He ate deadly poison, but was not harmed. The king violated the law, and the king shot three arrows, but the arrows fell back down. There, the king said, "Are you a god or a demon?" He requested that he wanted to die. The king allowed him to renounce. He renounced in the presence of Shakyamuni Buddha and attained the Arhatship. Thus, by saving a life, wherever that minister was reborn, his life was not obstructed, and he eventually attained the Arhatship. Furthermore, in the past, a wealthy householder had a Pratyekabuddha as an object of offering, whose complexion was very unsightly and whose skin was rough. One of the householder's daughters scorned and reviled him, saying "dirty." Later, when that Pratyekabuddha passed away, he displayed miracles such as flying in the sky, and she felt remorse and confessed. There, through the respect and hospitality shown to the Pratyekabuddha, she became of high caste and wealthy in all her lifetimes. Due to the mockery of his body, wherever she was reborn, her body was ugly. Later, she was reborn as the daughter of King Clear Victory, named Vajra, and her body became ugly and unsuitable, so she was secretly raised. When she grew up, a wise man of noble birth was appointed as a soldier, and she was hidden in a nine-storied dark house. She said, "Although I am the daughter of a king, I am unable to see the light of the sun and moon, which is so painful. The one who can save me from suffering is the Buddha." So she called out the name of Shakyamuni Buddha and took refuge, and she saw the face of the Buddha, and she became like a goddess. After hearing the Dharma, she attained the Stream-entry fruit and was liberated. Therefore, one should not speak disparagingly of any sentient being.
