Being extremely afflicted for the sake of attachment, it is said. King Long-Foot and others, even though they were born as human kings in previous lives due to the karmic imprints of the sin of eating meat, they still became meat-eaters. Great ministers, even in this life, among the seven households, if they are particularly greedy for meat and consume it in large quantities, they will be reborn as flesh-eating dakinis and fierce dakinis. Those great ministers, in their future lives, due to their attachment to the taste of meat, will fall into the animal realms of lions, tigers, leopards, wolves, weasels, cats, foxes, and owls, which consume a lot of meat, and into extremely cruel evil realms such as flesh-eating rakshasas. If they fall into these evil realms, it will be difficult even to obtain a human body, let alone nirvana. O great wisdom, the faults of eating meat are these. If one associates with meat-eaters, it goes without saying. If one can abstain from eating meat, the merits are very great. O great wisdom, foolish people will not understand these merits and faults. It is said. In particular, eating large amounts of meat is only done by outcastes and butchers, not by pure people of the world. As stated in the Lankavatara Sutra: O great wisdom, donkey meat, camel meat, dog meat, beef, and human meat are not eaten by the world. Like butchers, they say it is permissible to eat for money and sell it in the middle of the streets. Furthermore, those with a fishy smell, outcastes and fishermen, and others who eat dog meat, even if seen from afar, dogs will bark out of fear, and some may even die for fear of being killed. Similarly, O great wisdom, even the extremely small beings living in the sky, on land, and in water, as soon as they see meat-eaters from afar, they will immediately smell the scent with their sharp noses and flee quickly like escaping from rakshasas, and some may even be afraid to die. Furthermore, burning the flesh of a dead person and burning the flesh of other animals have no difference in smell; both meats have an unpleasant odor. It is also said that in this life, his mouth will become very foul-smelling. And so on, extensively explained, in short, all sentient

Because there is no one who has not been a parent, it is the flesh of parents; because there is no one who has not been a relative, it is the flesh of children; and because it is produced from the causes of semen and uterine blood, it is impure; just as a dead body is impure, so is flesh impure; and because it is possessed by spirits; and because the breath is not good; and because there is suffering when sleeping, suffering when waking, and bad dreams; when alone, one's essence is taken away by non-humans; one suddenly feels fear and dread; one does not have moderation in eating and drinking, and what is eaten is not digested; it breeds parasites in the stomach; one gets many diseases; one gets leprosy; and one does not know what is harmful to oneself, etc. The sutras say many faults of eating meat. These are the sins of beings eating meat. Therefore, even ordinary people, if they abstain from meat, can obtain great benefits. The *Lankavatara Sutra* says, "For the sake of abandoning meat, etc., Brahmins and yogis, those with wisdom and wealth, they will be reborn in these places." In short, because all beings who rely on family, etc., have immeasurable sins from eating meat, even non-Buddhist heretics do not eat meat. The *Holy Lankavatara Great Vehicle Sutra* says, "The Bodhisattva Mahamati asked: World Honored One, other heretics will certainly proclaim those who have the Dharma, who are attached to the views of worldly common heretics, and those who say there is or is not, permanent or impermanent, they also forbid eating meat, and even do not sell meat. Then, how can it be that the teachings proclaimed by the World Protector, the perfectly complete Buddha who is of one taste of compassion, have the situation of eating meat oneself and not forbidding eating meat?" etc. Also, like King Lion, who was addicted to eating meat and did not enter the Dharma, it was in order to gather them in; and in order to break the arrogance of those like Sudatta who think they are pure merely because they abstain from meat, the three pure meats were permitted. The *Vinaya Pitaka* says, "For those meats and fish, etc., that are given to good people, if they come into the bowl, one should check whether it is human meat, etc., and if it is not, one can eat it." It also says, "Meat left over from being eaten by a tiger and meat that is intentionally killed cannot be eaten." Therefore, the Vinaya Pitaka says that the three pure meats are allowed.
