The Biography of Gampopa. The Biography of Gampopa. Namo Guru Punya Ratnaye. (Tibetan, Sanskrit Devanagari, guru punya ratna ye, Teacher, Merit, Jewel) In the distant past, countless eons ago, there was a Tathagata Jewel Lotus Moon. At the end of the teachings of the pure and manifest King, seven thousand Bodhisattvas were requested by the King. They resided together with the Bodhisattva Beautiful Flower Moon in a forest called All Good, placing hundreds of millions of kotis of sentient beings on the path of non-retrogression. Then, the gods, with their divine eyes, saw that in the King's palace, hundreds of millions of kotis of sentient beings had attained the non-retrogressive state by obtaining the Dharma. He said, "I will go to expound the sacred Dharma." The other attendant Bodhisattvas dissuaded him, saying, "There are monks and others who slander the Dharma, and you are beautiful and pleasing to behold, so the King and others may become jealous." He said, "If I protect myself, I will not be able to protect the sacred Dharma." Having said this, he went to the King's palace. That morning, he placed hundreds of millions of kotis and ninety-nine sentient beings on the path of non-retrogression. The next day, he placed thirty-nine million sentient beings on the path of non-retrogression, and then he fasted and sat in meditation. On the second morning, he placed twenty-three million sentient beings on the path of non-retrogression. On the third morning, he placed ninety-nine million sentient beings on the path of non-retrogression. On the fourth morning, he placed hundreds of millions of kotis and nine sentient beings on the path of non-retrogression. On the fifth morning, he placed eighty thousand women on the path of non-retrogression. On the sixth morning, he placed the King's thousand sons on the path of enlightenment, but he still did not eat. On the seventh morning, King Dawa Chinp gave alms. When he was riding in a chariot to the garden with countless attendants, the King's five hundred daughters saw the monk, developed faith, attained the non-retrogressive state, and bowed to the Bodhisattva with folded hands. Likewise, they also saw the consorts paying their respects. The King thought, "I am ugly, and the monk is so handsome, I will lose my kingdom because of jealousy." So the King sent an executioner named Deji to kill the monk. The executioner cut off the monk's hands and feet and gouged out his eyes. From the places where he was cut, immeasurable rays of light and streams of milk flowed forth, and even after seven days, the golden color had not faded, and the marks and signs could still be seen. The King thought, "I will be born in hell." At that time, the gods in the sky also said that it was so. The King fell to the ground and wept bitterly, and then he cremated his body and built a stupa.
