If asked, what should be done? Starting from obtaining the true meaning of the Kalachakra, Following the teachings of the guru who desires accomplishments, The all-knowing one said, everything is in the Vajrayana. Likewise, for the intelligent disciples, the guru is like gold, If examined well, there is not even a little fault. In the degenerate age, the guru's faults and virtues are mixed, In every way, there is no one without any faults. If the virtues are more, and can be cultivated well, then the disciples should rely on him. Thus it is said, the guru's faults and virtues both, If the virtues are slightly more, it is said to be okay to rely on. Similarly, Guru Padmasambhava said, For example, a bee towards the good and bad of flowers, Does not examine, like sucking all the essence, When seeking instructions, do not examine the guru, Wherever there are virtues, take them, It is said to be like the behavior of a bee. Even prostrating to the old potter woman, Learning pottery and porcelain bowls. Similarly, the great Pandit Atisha said, He relied on one hundred and fifty gurus, If asked, are they more superior than you? He said, some of my merits are even one-hundredth, or even less than one-thousandth of theirs. The supreme Maitripa and Serlingpa, Said that their virtues are inconceivable. The great accomplished Thangtong Gyalpo also, Relied on more than five hundred gurus, From widows and renunciate nuns, male yogis, etc., Also requested empowerments and instructions from them. Ngok Lotsawa and others of the Kadampa said, The faults of a person do not contaminate the Dharma, For example, if the water of a canal flows into a field, There is no difference whether the canal is clean or unclean. Similarly, if the disciple obtains that Dharma, There is no difference whether the lineage is good or bad, it is said. Thus, there are two ways of relying on a guru, The Bhikshu Rahula Asuya, I, Did like the behavior of a bee, From those holding the title of light onwards, Until my own old father yogi, About forty gurus from whom I requested Dharma connections. Some became Vajra holders with complete Samaya, Some requested scriptures, some requested empowerments, Some requested guidance and pith instructions, Some even learned minor sciences. The accomplished Tsangpa Gyare said, Transmit those pure appearances to all Dharma practitioners, The prayer is towards the glorious Drukpa…

As it is said, the one and only supreme Lama, He who holds the light-name, I place as an ornament on my crown. As it came from the words of Akshobhya's feet, Although I have not prayed like a barking dog or grunting pig, To all the Lamas who have bestowed the empowerment connection, I purify the perception of the Yidam as actually present. Those who have bestowed the transmissions and instructions, I regard as Bodhisattvas abiding on the ground. Body, speech, mind, and material possessions, etc., I offer with respect in a manner that is appropriate and affluent. I do not know what is in your sight, But from my side, with eyes of wisdom, I do not disappoint the Dakinis and Dharma protectors. Furthermore, for as long as I live, Until I attain perfect enlightenment, I am never satisfied with relying on virtuous friends. May I please all virtuous friends With gains, respect, and service. The first chapter on relying on virtuous friends. Moreover, in the Bodhisattva Pitaka, it is said: By hearing, one knows the Dharma. By hearing, one turns away from sin. By hearing, one abandons the meaningless. By hearing, one attains Nirvana. Therefore, hearing is of utmost importance. However, there appear to be two ways of explaining it, the way of the Kusali and the way of the Pandit. First, The way of the Kusali is such that the end of each object of knowledge is never reached, like measuring the sky with an arm's length. Life is without leisure, and death is uncertain. Rely on one qualified Lama who possesses blessings and realization, Meditate on one essential instruction. It is sufficient to rely solely on clearing obstacles, enhancing merit, and making supplications. If one strives in this way, the wisdom arising from meditation will blaze. It is said that one who knows one thing will become skilled in all. This is the follower of faith with dull faculties. The way of the Pandit is as follows: If one does not study all five sciences, Even if one is a noble being, one will not attain omniscience. Therefore, Bodhisattvas Do not have objects of knowledge that should not be learned. If one does not cut off external imputations with hearing, It is like imitating footprints without knowing the path, One will stray into wrong paths, dangerous places, and evil ways. Without knowing the means of accomplishing enlightenment, It is like an arrow that does not see the target and a stone in the dark, One does not know whether one hits an enemy or a friend. Therefore, it is said that one should first hear and contemplate. If one asks which of these two ways is better?
