Moreover, these three feelings were also mentioned. If the Blessed One said that whatever is felt is suffering here, then from what perspective did the Blessed One say that whatever is felt is suffering here? The Blessed One said, "Kungawo (Avalokiteśvara), whatever is felt is suffering here, because I spoke considering the impermanence of formations (Sanskrit: saṃskāra) and the variability of formations (Sanskrit: saṃskāra)." To say that the feeling of happiness should be regarded as suffering is to say it in terms of the suffering of change and the suffering of formations (Sanskrit: saṃskāra). As it is said in the Bhikkhuni Dhammadiinna Sutta of the Middle Length Discourses: The feeling of happiness is happy when it arises, happy when it exists, but suffering when it changes. The feeling of suffering is suffering when it arises and suffering when it exists. And in the Six Sense-Fields Collection Sutra, it is said: Whatever is impermanent is suffering. Therefore, it is also said in the sutra: The perfect Buddha, who knows everything, knows the impermanence of formations (Sanskrit: saṃskāra) and the variability, so he said that feeling is suffering. Thinking that suffering is happiness is a reversed perception, because worldly people regard feelings, desires, and birth as happiness even if there is suffering, which is a reversed perception. Because most of them are painful, that's why they think so. Furthermore, the three feelings mentioned by the Blessed One, as well as the roots of the five feelings, etc., are also contradictory. (In addition, what is the meaning of suffering?) If harm and unpleasantness are suffering, then why not consider benefit and pleasantness as happiness? It is also unreasonable to think that small suffering, etc., will produce happiness, etc., because it can also be thought that small happiness, etc., will produce suffering, etc. It is also incorrect to think that the antidote to suffering will produce happiness, because the antidote is sometimes happiness and sometimes equanimity (Sanskrit: upekṣā, Pali: upekkhā). Moreover, the cause of happiness is unstable.

It is also unreasonable to say "taste." Food and the like are not the only cause of happiness; body and habit are also causes of happiness. Because it can be observed that the same phenomena, such as form, without distinction, become happiness, suffering, and equanimity for different beings. If it is said that merely because suffering arises from excessive consumption of food and the like, there is no cause of virtue, then the cause of suffering would also not exist, because the cause of suffering can also become the cause of happiness in some cases. This extreme statement, because it is negated by the direct perception of experiencing the feeling of happiness, should not be refuted in the first place, but because it was made by previous teachers, I have done so. The Sutra School and others say that the Vaibhashikas' statement that the truth of the origin is the same as the truth of suffering contradicts the sutras. The sutra says, "What is the truth of the origin? It is craving accompanied by delight and attachment, which is especially delighted in this and that." Thus, it only says that craving is the origin, so it is contradictory. The Vaibhashikas, however, consider this teaching to be primary, and in the commentary on the Dependent Origination Sutra, it says, "Even without craving, there is no non-craving." Like this, it is spoken from the aspect of the cause of manifesting birth. The sutra says, "Action is the cause of birth, and craving is the cause of manifestation." The Sutra of the Collection of the Six Sense Spheres says, "Action, craving, and ignorance are the causes of formations in the next life." Therefore, if all three of these are shown to be the origin, then why is only craving shown? Because only with craving does one take birth in samsara, and because of the continuity of habituation and the firm clinging to the body, craving is primary, but the others are also the origin. Therefore, they believe that suffering and origin are coextensive. The Sutra School believes that the final aggregates of an Arhat are suffering, but not the origin. In the Compendium of Topics, it also says, "The eye to the mind of the final existence of an Arhat is from the eye to the mind, but not their realms."
