Agreeable feelings are happiness, disagreeable feelings are suffering, and those different from these two, accompanied by defilements, are equanimity and related aggregates. The commentary states: 'Due to its power, the formations that lead to experiencing happiness, etc., also obtain the name of agreeable, etc.' Therefore, due to the power of these feelings, other minds and mental factors that are concordant with them, as well as non-concordant co-emergent conditions and objective conditions, are also referred to as agreeable, etc. Among these, 'variously' means suffering from the suffering of change and formation. Although its essence is happiness, it suffers when it changes and because it is defiled. Disagreeable things suffer from the suffering of formation and suffering, because they are defiled and experienced as suffering from the moment of birth. Other defiled formations different from these two suffer only from the suffering of formation, because they are under the control of karma and afflictions, and are incompatible with the noble ones, and because they are harmed in an instant. Alternatively, 'variously' means that in the desire realm there are three kinds of suffering, in the third dhyana and below there are two, and in the fourth and above there is suffering only from the suffering of formation. If impermanence itself is the suffering of formation, then the path truth would also become suffering? No, because the path is the cause of leading to the happiness of the cessation of all suffering, is undefiled, and is in accordance with the noble ones, it is not called suffering. The meaning of suffering is that any defiled thing that is impermanent and incompatible with the noble ones is harmful. Other defiled formations are mentioned in the sutra: 'Whatever is impermanent is suffering.' Because all existence is the opposite of liberation, it is considered suffering because it is incompatible with the noble ones and is harmful. Therefore, the teacher said: 'A single hair on the palm of the hand, people do not perceive it. When it enters the eye, it is like unpleasantness and causing harm. Children, like the palm of the hand, do not perceive the subtle suffering of formation.'

Like the eye of a noble one, it generates great faith. (Only noble ones can see the suffering of conditioning.) Just as noble ones have thoughts of suffering even for beings at the peak of existence, children do not have thoughts of suffering even for the bodies in the Avici hell. (If it is said that all contaminated things are not suffering because there is also happiness, then,) here, the young monk Jie asserts that happiness is rare. In the Seventy Sufferings, it is said: Because it is the cause of suffering, because it produces many sufferings, because if there is suffering, one wants it, therefore, one understands that happiness is suffering. This statement is not correct, because the cause of suffering is the aspect of the origin of suffering (how does it become suffering?), (If according to the latter two statements,) the aggregates of the upper two realms are not the cause of painful feelings, therefore, it would follow that the noble ones born in those two realms do not have thoughts of suffering towards the aggregates. Furthermore, the monk Palden said that there is no feeling of happiness, and all feelings are only the suffering of suffering. As the Bhagavan said: Whatever is felt is suffering here. And, the feeling of happiness should be regarded as suffering. And, in the Sutra of the Four Perverted Aspects of the Four Sentences, it is said: For suffering, thinking it is happiness is a perverted thought, and so on. Moreover, from the perspective of reasoning, things like food and clothing, which are clearly considered by worldly people to be the cause of happiness, can also cause suffering if overused. Therefore, the cause of happiness is not truly existent. Moreover, unskilled people have thoughts of happiness towards the remedy for suffering (only for those who have not been tormented by hunger and thirst). And, just like putting down a heavy burden, they cling to small suffering as happiness. Therefore, what worldly people say is happiness is actually suffering. His understanding is also unreasonable. First of all, the first teaching was spoken by the Bhagavan himself with a hidden meaning. The noble Ananda asked the Bhagavan: The happiness and suffering, and neither happiness nor suffering, that the Bhagavan spoke of
