Second, explaining the truth of the object of focus. Second, explaining the truth of the object of focus. Second, then, what are the truths mentioned in "from seeing and meditating on the truth"? The truths to be seen and meditated upon are explained as four. Where are they explained? In the first position of this very text, "the truth of the undefiled path" and so on, which speaks of the path, and "whatever is eliminated by individual examination, separation" which speaks of cessation, and "suffering, its origin, the world" which also speaks of those two. Because it is also stated in the sutras. Are the order of these the same as that shown in the first position? No, it is not. Then, what is it like? Suffering and the arising of suffering, and likewise cessation and the path, are the noble truths, so the order of those four is like this. The commentary says, "The word 'likewise' is for the purpose of thoroughly showing that its own nature is just as it was said in the first position." The reason for showing that order is that the commentary speaks of the four mindfulnesses, and the arising like the samadhi of gradual abiding, and the order of cause and effect that is in accordance, and the order that is in accordance with what is easy to understand like the four right abandonments, and the three orders that are in accordance with how the object is manifested, here these truths are shown according to the order of how they are first manifested, because in the path of seeing, one first manifests suffering and so on. If it were shown according to the order of arising, then because it is the cause, it would be wrong to show the origin and the path first. In the path of seeing, such manifestation also arises in the order of complete discernment in the accumulation and preparation stages, like a chariot running unhindered on a marked course, for example, like seeing a disease and then seeking its cause, the cessation of the disease, and the method of treatment, medicine, one first clings to what, is harmed by what, and desires to be liberated from what, therefore it is suffering, and what is its cause, therefore after it is origin, and what is the cessation of suffering, therefore after that is cessation, and what is the method of obtaining it, therefore one contemplates the path, so the order of complete discernment is like that, as it is said in the scriptures.

Now, the Lama says: Disease is to be understood, the cause of disease is to be abandoned, the place of ease is to be attained, medicine is to be relied upon, just like that. Suffering, the origin of suffering, the cessation of suffering, and the path to cessation, are to be understood, to be abandoned, to be realized, and to be relied upon. Thus it is said. The nature of these Four Noble Truths has been explained before. Etymology: Why is it called "Truth"? Because in the realm of the noble ones, suffering and so on are true. But ordinary people think that suffering is happiness, that accumulation is the cause of happiness, that cessation is not extinguished, that some are afraid of annihilation, and that the path is the wrong path, and that asceticism is the root of suffering. Therefore, it is said in the sutra: What the noble ones say is happiness, others think is suffering. What others say is happiness, the noble ones think is suffering. Therefore, here, all the fruitional parts with outflows are suffering. (That is, the last aggregates of the Arhat and the one who is free from attachment are also considered to be pure suffering.) The part that is the root of it is accumulation, cessation is the unconditioned individual cessation, and the path is the three paths of the unconditioned seeing, cultivating, and no-more-learning paths without outflows. (Some say that the first two are truths recognized by the noble ones, but are not noble ones because they have outflows; the latter two are good and the basis of the outflows is the same, so both are.) The commentary says: The aggregates of close grasping that have become the fruit are the truth of suffering. The parts that have become the cause are the truth of accumulation, because all suffering arises from this. Therefore, these two are the relationship of cause and effect, and there is a difference in name only, but there is no difference in substance. Cessation and the path also have differences in substance, so the Vaibhashikas think that the first two truths have the same function. If suffering (and discomfort) is only a part of the aggregate of feeling, then how can all that has outflows be the truth of suffering? It should be said that all that has outflows is suffering. Why? Because they each have three kinds of suffering: suffering, the suffering of change, and the suffering of conditioning. (Which ones have suffering?)
