Collection of Teachings by Master Bo Dong Chokley Namgyal JCN18 The Adornment of Shambhala, Clarifying the Arrangement of Glorious Shambhala The Adornment of Shambhala, Clarifying the Arrangement of Glorious Shambhala The Adornment of Shambhala, Clarifying the Arrangement of Shambhala Homage to the glorious and holy Lama and the glorious Kalachakra. In Shambhala, the supreme city adorned by gods, The supreme gods reverently attend with their crowns, The goddesses end the religious customs of the heretics, May the kings who have become gods among gods be pleased. Lineage Holder, embodiment of the three protectors of the family, Respectfully bowing to the feet of the unsurpassed Lama, The supreme abode of the highest vehicle of mantra, Shambhala, I shall explain the circumstances of this place according to the meaning of the tantras and commentaries. Here, regarding the profound teachings of the Vajrayana, the way that is even more profound, the lords of the tenth bhumi, the Dharma Kings, the Lineage Holders, for the sake of countless disciples who possess pure minds, the arrangement of the completely pure realm of Shambhala, although there are various different views of the lamas, the view of my glorious and holy Lama, the all-knowing Dharma Lord, seems particularly excellent. Based on this, I will explain my understanding from the great tantras and commentaries, regarding the slight differences in Indian measurements and so on. The Dharma Lord's view is: In the new translation of the one hundred and fiftieth and one hundred and fifty-first verses of 'The World System': 'In the center of the salt and alkaline water ocean, the Thubpa (Buddha) dwells on the mandala of the earth, that place truly exists. At three hundred thousand yojanas, fragments of the sun gradually revolve, the lords of humans rotate in sequence. One fragment is twenty-five thousand yojanas, the right half is known as Shambhala.' The supreme city of the Thubpa, has more than a hundred billion in number, that place is covered with jeweled petals. All directions are surrounded by supreme snow mountains, in its center is Mount Kailash.' The fragment of Mount Kailash on earth, together with the snow mountain, occupies one-third. Each petal on the outside is adorned with the land of the sun and the lands of the continents. The land is definitely bound by a hundred billion cities, a million cities surround its territory.' And the one hundred and fifty-seventh verse: 'One hundred yojanas multiplied by arrows (here referring to a calculation method)' --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Are the four directions of the mountains, which possess perfect dimensions, encircling Shambhala (a pure land of bliss)? 'O glorious king of Kalapa (the capital of Shambhala), renowned as Shambhala, some glorious kings have placed the lord of the gods as the lord of men, and said, 'You, go to your own place!' The first two verses above describe the formation of Shambhala, while the third line is considered to indicate the thickness of the snow mountains surrounding the entire area of Shambhala. 5-431 Shambhala, with its ninety-six regions, has a total diameter equivalent to half of the small Jambudvipa (the world we live in), which is thirteen thousand five hundred yojanas (an ancient Indian unit of length). It appears as an eight-petaled lotus, with Mount Kailash (Gang Rinpoche), round and towering, in the center, with a height of one-third of thirteen thousand five hundred yojanas. The outside of the lotus petals is surrounded by snow mountains with a width of five hundred yojanas. On Mount Kailash, there are one hundred million towns of Shambhala, the main one being the king's palace, Kalapa, with a circumference of twelve yojanas. To the south of the palace is the Malaya Garden, with two lakes to the east and west. Each of the twelve lotus petals has twelve hundred million towns. Such a layout is explained in the commentaries of the Tantras (secret teachings) and is very exquisite. However, its size seems too enormous, because such a vast area should have been mentioned even in the Sutras (public teachings), but it is not. If the total diameter of Shambhala is thirteen thousand five hundred yojanas, then the height of Mount Kailash should be one-third of that, which is four thousand one hundred and sixty-six yojanas. According to the yojana of Abhidharma (Buddhist philosophy), the yojana of Kalachakra (Wheel of Time) is twice as large as the yojana of Abhidharma. Therefore, it would result in a little more than one thousand three hundred and thirty-two yojanas of Abhidharma. If calculated by daily travel, one yojana is equivalent to four Grosa (an ancient Indian unit of length, one yojana equals four Grosa), and one Grosa is equivalent to one day's travel, then the height of Mount Kailash is equivalent to two thousand and eighty-three days of travel. Half of the diameter of the top of Mount Kailash would also take one thousand and forty-one days to complete. If this is the case, it would be inconsistent with the statement that it takes ten days for the sages to enter the forest from the city of Kalapa. If the forest refers to the forest on the edge of Mount Kailash, then the Malaya Garden, according to this calculation, is twelve yojanas, and according to the Abhidharma calculation, it is twenty-four yojanas. Then the daily travel... 5-432 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
