At the time of wandering in the Bardo (Tibetan: བར་དོ་, Intermediate State), examine the signs of the Bardo, such as the presence or absence of a shadow. Repeatedly examine and recognize the nature of the Bardo. Having recognized it, remember the profound instructions given by the holy Lama, practice the supreme gathering of practices, remember the Great Seal of Clear Light (Tibetan: འོད་གསལ་ཕྱག་རྒྱ་ཆེན་མོ་), and pray that the root of all illusions may be cut off. When the winds gather from the impure channels, from the arising of immeasurable Clear Light, be unafraid and fearless, for it is the play of the Dharmakaya (Tibetan: ཆོས་སྐུ, Sanskrit: Dharmakāya, English: Dharmakaya, Literal meaning: Body of Dharma). May it arise as pure, great bliss. When the terrifying laughter of sounds resounds, that is your own sound, the awakening of the essence of the Sugata (Tibetan: བདེ་བཤེགས་སྙིང་པོ་, Sanskrit: Tathāgatagarbha, English: Tathagatagarbha, Literal meaning: Womb of the Thus-Gone). May you realize that it is the indestructible Vajra speech, the inexhaustible melody, the voice of the All-Knowing. When the messengers of Yama (Tibetan: གཤིན་རྗེ་ཕོ་ཉ་) appear in terrifying forms, that is the manifestation of the essence of the Sugata. May you not fear the supreme protector, recognize its nature, and see it as the essence of the Yidam deity (Tibetan: ཡི་དམ་ལྷ་). Through the power of all the virtues accumulated in the three times—past, present, and future—through virtuous actions of body, speech, and mind, and through the blessings of the Three Jewels (Tibetan: དཀོན་མཆོག་གསུམ།), may the consciousness (Tibetan: རིག་པ་) of the deceased be transferred into the expanse of reality (Tibetan: དབྱིངས་). By diligently practicing the swift and easy path of mantra, when the Alaya-consciousness (Tibetan: ཀུན་གཞིའི་རྣམ་ཤེས།, Sanskrit: Ālayavijñāna, English: Alaya-vijñana, Literal meaning: Ground-of-all consciousness) and breath cease together swiftly, may you quickly attain the five wisdoms of the Alaya and accomplish the Rupakaya (Tibetan: གཟུགས་སྐུ་) for the benefit of others. Having thoroughly understood that Samsara (Tibetan: འཁོར་བ་) is suffering, and that its cause is Samudaya (Tibetan: ཀུན་འབྱུང་), may you diligently practice the supreme path where breath ceases swiftly, and quickly attain the ultimate truth of Nirodha (Tibetan: འགོག་བདེན་). Not understanding that all is merely conceptual fabrication, may you diligently practice the supreme method that can cease the suffering of dependent origination (Tibetan: གཞན་དབང་) together with the breath, and having attained Parinishpanna (Tibetan: ཡོངས་གྲུབ་), liberate all beings. Relying on the profound method that can destroy the adventitious stains of outer and inner conventionality (Tibetan: ཀུན་རྫོབ་), together with the life force and downward-clearing wind, may you quickly attain the supreme ultimate essence. This is the aspiration prayer of profound introduction, which should also be recited. Thus, for all who are introduced, pure appearances will arise, and the heroes and Dakinis (Tibetan: དཔའ་བོ་མཁའ་འགྲོ་) will greet them with flowers, music, and rainbows. As it is said in the 'Gathering of Dakinis': 'When a yogi passes away, the yoginis, such as the blood-drinkers, will hold flowers and other things in their hands, along with various banners and flags, and various sounds of cymbals, and various offerings of songs, they will lead him to the realm of the Dakinis.' And in the Guhya Tantra it is said: 'Death is merely a concept; in reality, one is being led to a pure realm.' And in the Tantra it is said: 'The moon and the sun...' --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

'When the channels deteriorate and both paths disappear, when the life-wind greatly ceases, may the lotus vajra fully awaken and the rabbit-holder (moon) fully enter the great form of the sun.' When matter and non-matter become one, when the three states abide in existence, and when the unshakeable is well realized. At that time, where will that yogi go? Even if it is just a little, one goes to the supreme state.' Therefore, it is crucial to give instructions at the time of death. By giving instructions, one will undoubtedly attain the supreme state of the Great Seal of Clear Light. Likewise, until dust falls on the nostrils, do not touch the corpse. Even for an ordinary yogi, if the complexion is good through meditation, observe carefully. Give instructions a few times without raising your voice in the first few days, and do not disturb vows such as rituals. Some may remain for about seven weeks, so avoid distractions and harm. The signs of passing away are described in the extraordinary transference of consciousness: 'If from that (body) there is transference to the bardo, all four consciousnesses, together with the wealth-lord wind, transfer from the body together with the two bindus.' Those two bindus, the red one above and the white one below, will emerge from the path. At that time, it is called the awakening from the faint of consciousness. In the bardo, the illusory body of habit alone, at that moment, is accomplished like a dream body. At that time, cherish the profound instructions of the bardo.' If such signs occur, since the inner breath has ceased, it is sufficient to perform empowerment and rituals for the corpse. Perform fire pujas and so on as desired.' This concludes the instructions for an ordinary yogi. The ground of all, possessing all perfections, is the supreme emptiness. The path is good, the meaning of the Great Seal of Clear Light. For the yogi who meditates with one-pointedness, whether superior, middling, or inferior, these instructions have been summarized. May the vast white virtue of this compilation enable the mother and child of the yogi's clear light at the time of death to perfectly unite, the awareness to dissolve into the dharmadhatu, and thus may the essence of the Sugata be realized. May the emanations of immeasurable form bodies manifest, and until the ocean of samsara is not emptied, may all beings be placed on the supreme enlightenment through skillful means that tame whatever is appropriate. This profound instruction on the yogi's death, called 'The Profound Instructions on the Yogi's Death,' was written at Sakya's Lungpuk, Nangkhau Drakdzong, by the bhikshu Yontan Zangpo at the urging of Chokyi Drakpa Palzangpo, a Bodhisattva of the Tenth Ground who had reached the realm of the Clear Light Great Seal. May this bring vast benefit to the teachings and all sentient beings! Vessel. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
