The Commentary on the Noble Aspiration for Excellent Conduct: The Sun Illuminating the Essential Points of the Ocean of Bodhisattva Conduct. The Commentary on the Noble Aspiration for Excellent Conduct: The Sun Illuminating the Essential Points of the Ocean of Bodhisattva Conduct. The treatise called "The Commentary on the Noble Aspiration for Excellent Conduct: The Sun Illuminating the Essential Points of the Ocean of Bodhisattva Conduct" is present. Homage to Arya Maitreya! From the expanse of the two accumulations, excellently arise flowers of marks and signs, radiantly blooming. Branches of wisdom and compassion fill the path of the gods, weighed down by the burden of the fruits of the three bodies. The fragrance of altruistic activity radiates widely, a source of shade and coolness of benefit and happiness. To that great wish-fulfilling tree of the Powerful Sage, at all times, I prostrate. In the midst of a gathering of countless Bodhisattva stars, Like the full moon, supremely excellent in all conduct, Having reached the culmination of all supreme aspirations, I bow to the Bodhisattva Samantabhadra and Manjushri. The great currents of aspirations, like the rivers of the Ganges, Just as rivers flow into the great ocean, Because they gather completely, it is called the King of Aspirations. I will slightly differentiate the meaning of this well-known text. There are three parts to this: Who composed it? The greatness of the composer. Explanation of the meaning of the text. Firstly, who spoke this? This comes from the Sutra of the Array of Trees, a part of the Avatamsaka Sutra. The youth Sudhana, from the beginning with Manjushri to the end with Samantabhadra, relied on a hundred spiritual friends, who taught various Dharma teachings. Maitreya taught the benefits of the mind of enlightenment, and Samantabhadra spoke this aspiration to Sudhana. So, is this the word of the Buddha or not? It is the word of the Buddha, for it is included in the Buddha's word of permission and the Buddha's word of blessing. Secondly, Samantabhadra is actually a Buddha, but in order to benefit all sentient beings, he takes the form of the eldest son of all the Buddhas of the ten directions and three times. As this text says: The eldest son of all the Buddhas, Whose name is Samantabhadra. As it says, and in other sutras, especially from Ratnakara, with Manjushri as witness, there is great praise for Samantabhadra.

It is said that the eldest of the sons of the Manifest Snow Mountain Ocean are Samantabhadra and Manjushri. The third part has three points: explaining the name, explaining the meaning of the text, and explaining the actions of complete accomplishment. The first part has two points: explaining the name and its meaning, and explaining the salutation of the translation. The first point is: In India, that is, the holy land, the name of this treatise in Sanskrit is: Āryabhadracaryapraṇidhānarāja, which means "Noble, Excellent Conduct Prayer King." When translated into Tibetan, Ārya means noble, Bhadra means excellent, Carya means conduct, Praṇidhāna means prayer, and Rāja means king. The meaning of the name is: Why is it called by this name? There is a reason for calling it that way, because the Bodhisattva Samantabhadra, representing his own conduct, makes the supreme conduct the object of prayer, so it is called the Excellent Conduct Prayer, and because it is more supreme and principal than other prayers, it is called the king. In the Indian commentaries of this treatise, it is said that Excellent Conduct is the conduct of Samantabhadra, and also the general conduct of Bodhisattvas, as well as various explanations of virtuous deeds, but this is not contradictory. Among them, it is both excellent and conduct, so it is Excellent Conduct; because it is the conduct of Samantabhadra, it is called the Excellent Conduct. In short, the conduct of the princes, such as the six perfections and all other special conducts, are called Excellent Conduct. The second point is: Homage to the Noble Manjushri Youth, which is made by the translator. That is to say, because it transcends the realm of ordinary beings, it is noble; because it is free from the coarse touch of faults, it is excellent; because all qualities are perfectly complete, it is auspicious; because it is like a sixteen-year-old youth, it is a youth. To prostrate to him, that is, the meaning of "namaḥ" is to devote one's mind and prostrate. The second part, explaining the meaning of the text, has three points: the preliminary seven branches, the main prayer, and the explanation of the concluding order. The first part has two points: the actual explanation, and the summary of these meanings. The first part has seven points: prostration, offering, confession of sins, rejoicing in merits, urging to turn the wheel of Dharma.
