It is said that reciting "VA HA" and circumambulating will purify sins. The mantra for prostrating to the object of veneration is: OM NAMO MANJUSHRIYE, NAMA SUSHRIIYE, NAMA UTTAMA SHRIYE SVAHA. It is said that reciting this mantra and then prostrating will bring greater benefits and transformations. It is often mentioned in the scriptures that one should circumambulate stupas. If interpreted narrowly, it means circumambulating those that are currently known as stupas. However, if interpreted broadly, the term "stupa" can be used as an abbreviation for the objects of body, speech, and mind that serve as supports for offerings. In this way, taking the actual stupa as an example, all objects of body, speech, and mind can be referred to as stupas. With what kind of intention should one circumambulate? Generally, it is to purify the obscurations of the three doors, and especially with the intention to be liberated from the lower realms, to be liberated from samsara in general, and to attain Buddhahood. The latter is more beneficial than the former. Even if one only circumambulates a single object of body, speech, and mind, one should think that all refuges are gathered in it, that all supports reside in it, or that it is being circumambulated by everyone. Circumambulating with this thought will bring even greater benefits. Because the magnitude of benefits depends on how one holds the intention, one should broaden one's intention with faith and so on. However, even if one does not know how to hold a good intention and circumambulates in a playful manner, benefits will still arise. In the Sutra on the Ritual for Increasing the Power of the Buddha, it says: "If anyone, for the sake of offering to the Thus-Gone One, laughs, jokes, speaks childishly, plays, or makes a stupa out of clay, all these will eventually be freed from suffering and will manifest and attain the Unsurpassed, Perfect, and Complete Enlightenment." And in the Lotus Sutra of the Sacred Dharma, it says: "Children, in their play, build stupas for the sake of the King. Even if they pile them up with sand, those who do so will attain Bodhi." It is said that this principle also applies to prostrations, offerings, circumambulations, and so on. In the past, a snail was carried away by a wave and accidentally circumambulated a stupa containing the essence of relics.
