The Essence of Well-Spoken Merits of Circumambulation. The Essence of Well-Spoken Merits of Circumambulation. The Essence of Well-Spoken Merits of Circumambulation is present. Namo Shakyamuni! The Completed Buddha who has perfected the qualities of abandonment and realization. The sacred Dharma of cessation and path, free from all suffering and faults. The Sangha who practice that very Dharma. I respectfully prostrate to the Three Jewels, the refuge. The three forms of the Three Jewels' supports are also fields for accumulating merit, and are no different from them, places of respect, prostration, and offering. Therefore, I respectfully bow with unwavering faith. All beings, high, low, and intermediate, have many ways of doing good, but here, to increase the joy of others, I will briefly describe the merits and quantities of circumambulation. There are two parts to this: the benefits of circumambulation, and the explanation of quantities, etc. The first is: From the Vinaya-vastu: "Any wise person who, with great faith, walks around a Buddha's stupa, the weight of gold from the Jambu River, even a hundred thousand, is equal to that." Also, from the Sutra Requested by King Clear: "Whoever, with faith, circumambulates a Thuba's stupa or statue, in future lives will be revered by great enemies, become a vessel of goodness, and possess all qualities." Also, from the Flower Heap Sutra: "After the Tathagata has passed into complete nirvana, offering some flowers to the stupas, or offering lamps, and then, with a joyful mind, walking and dancing, saying 'I prostrate to the Buddha, the Bhagavan,' those who play with lions for a hundred kalpas, or a thousand kalpas, or a hundred thousand kalpas, there is no place for them to fall back into." Also, from the Noble Avalokiteshvara Sutra: "In the future, in the last of the five hundred periods of the future, whoever respects, makes a teacher of, draws, offers to, recites, prays to, praises, and circumambulates a relic the size of a mustard seed after the Tathagata has passed into complete nirvana, will fully obtain five benefits. What are the five? They are: to have mindfulness, to have understanding, and to have a sense of shame and embarrassment.
