In general, there are these two ways of establishing [paths]. From the perspective of two functions, the path of practice (sgrub pa sgom lam) is established primarily by establishing the mark of ultimate realization, and the path of purification (rnam dag sgom lam) is established primarily by establishing the mark of ultimate abandonment. This is because the former performs the activity of accomplishing omniscience, and the latter performs the activity of accomplishing the essence body (ngo bo nyid sku). These two are not contradictory, because it is reasonable to consider them to be coextensive and co-existent. If the first is divided, there are five, because there are five such as the essence of the path of practice. The path of purification is explained with five distinctions: from "Buddha's teachings" to "being influenced by evil friends" is the distinction of cause. From "pure fruits, forms, etc." to "said to be uninterruptedly pure" is the distinction of object. From "afflictions, knowable, three paths" to "Buddha is completely pure in every way" is the distinction of result. From "the nine grounds are great" to "etc., the path is pure" is the distinction of essence. To show the distinction of what is to be measured, including refuting disputes, is "to abandon disputes about this." In the context of the object, some consider the path of liberation of the second ground as the fruit of the ascetic's conduct, and when it is purified by true existence, they explain that its object, forms, etc., are also purified by true existence, which is unreasonable. Because the path of liberation of the second ground is not the fruit of the ascetic's conduct, and there are no forms, sounds, etc. that become its actual object. Even if it is purified by true existence, it is not the meaning here, because here it needs to be combined with the way of purification from defilements. Therefore, just as the imputed fruit of the ascetic's conduct is considered to be the meaning of the expressed fruit of the ascetic's conduct, the path of liberation of the second ground, when you are purified from the defilements of the uninterrupted path of leading, your object, forms, etc., are also purified from the defilements of the nature of the uninterrupted path of leading you, because these two purifications are the same kind of purification that is devoid of a single purifier. In the words of the wise, even if the nature of the path of liberation of the second ground is considered to be purified from defilements, it is not...

Therefore, it is difficult to remove the stains of its liberation portion. So, when the stains of the second ground's liberation path, such as the self-leading unobstructed path portion, are completely purified, what does it mean that its object, form, etc., is also purified by the stains of the unobstructed path portion that leads it? At that time, is its object, ignorance, also purified or not purified by the stains of the unobstructed path portion that leads it? If it is purified, then ignorance will become both stained and unstained, which is unreasonable. If it is not purified, then it contradicts the statement that the root "form, etc." includes all dharmas by the word "etc.", so what should be done? There is no fault. Because, the meaning of purification here is not the general meaning that form, etc., is completely purified by stains, but when the stains of the second ground's liberation path, such as the self-leading unobstructed path portion, are completely purified, it is because it has been abandoned. From then on, no matter what kind of form, etc., the subsequent similar types of the liberation path focus on, the self-grasping of the degree of abandonment that one had previously will not arise again, and it is purified in this way. Therefore, even if one focuses on ignorance, etc., that kind of self-grasping will not arise in one's own mind, and this aspect is established as the meaning of purification. The purification mentioned here, as mentioned in the context of "three kinds of afflictions, knowledges, and paths," etc., refers to the cessation truth. And there are four types of cessation truth, because there are four types of purification: Hearer, Solitary Realizer, Bodhisattva, and Buddha. The cessation truth of the Buddha is extremely pure, because all obstacles are extremely pure from the root. "The ninth ground is great," etc., means that the Buddha's purification is said to be extremely pure. Because the purification itself, through the power of the nine gradual paths of cultivation of the Great Vehicle, gradually abandons the innate self-grasping, small, medium, and large, included in the three realms and nine grounds, and proclaims the ultimate purification. Divided into nine, there is a way to abandon it in what way. That is, innate self-grasping has three types: small, medium, and large, and each of them is divided into three types: small, medium, and large. From the last unobstructed path of the second ground to the last unobstructed path of the tenth ground, the nine are combined with what is to be abandoned and the antidote.

Yes. However, when it is necessary to combine again the Path of Uninterruptedness (Tibetan: bar chad med lam) of the transformation of the nature of the first ground, in order to combine with the coarse aspect of the great innate self-grasping (Tibetan: bden 'dzin lhan skyes chen po) divided into coarse and subtle, it is also possible to combine eighteen, nineteen, and twenty. That is to say, dividing each of the previous nine grounds into two, coarse and subtle, and combining them with the upper and lower two aspects of the nine grounds, there are eighteen. Dividing the first of the eighteen into two, coarse and subtle, and combining it with the Path of Uninterruptedness and abandonment-and-realization (Tibetan: spang gnyen) of the first ground's path of meditation. It is reasonable to divide it into ten parts, divide each into two, coarse and subtle, and combine it with the upper and lower aspects and abandonment-and-realization of the ten grounds' path of meditation. The rest can be understood from what has already been explained elsewhere, because I was afraid of too much content here, so I did not write it. Auspicious! A summary of the essence of the general meaning of the second and third chapters.
