Praise to the Victorious One: A Concise and Clear Commentary on the Attainment of Immortality. Praise to the Victorious One: A Concise and Clear Commentary on the Attainment of Immortality. Herein dwells the treatise entitled "Praise to the Victorious One, the Bhagavan, a Concise and Clear Commentary on the Attainment of Immortality." Having unified the activities of all the Buddhas, in order to uphold all the sacred Dharma of the Buddhas, the one who dances in the saffron robes of a Bodhisattva, to Tsongkhapa, the successor of the Buddhas, I bow. He is the embodiment of the wisdom and compassion of all the departed ones, a manifestation of the form of a most beautiful goddess. Merely remembering him bestows life and supreme wisdom. May the venerable Victorious One protect us. The words of praise for her are like a garden of youthful lotuses, opened wide by the light of the sun of wisdom, making the essence of their meaning bloom clearly, so that the intelligent six-legged bees may revel in a dance of soaring flight. Here, the praise to the Victorious One, the Crown Ornament, called "The Attainment of Immortality," is the Dharma to be explained. There are three aspects to this: offering praise, vowing to explain, and the manner of engaging in the explanation. The first has two parts: paying homage by considering the Guru and Manjushri as inseparable, and offering special praise in this context. The first is: ན་མཿཤྲཱི་གུ་རུ་མཉྫུ་གྷོ་ཥཱ་ཡ། (Tibetan, Devanagari, Romanized Sanskrit, Literal Chinese meaning), it is said, which means, "I pay homage to the glorious Guru and Manjughosha." Śrī (Tibetan, Devanagari, Romanized Sanskrit, Literal Chinese meaning) means glorious or possessing glory, Guru (Tibetan, Devanagari, Romanized Sanskrit, Literal Chinese meaning) means teacher, Manjughosha (Tibetan, Devanagari, Romanized Sanskrit, Literal Chinese meaning) means gentle voice, and namaḥ (Tibetan, Devanagari, Romanized Sanskrit, Literal Chinese meaning) means to bow or pay homage. The second is: "Fulfilling the hopes of beings in the three realms," etc., the four lines, which state that the hopes and desires of beings dwelling in the three realms—below the earth, on the earth, and above the earth—are fulfilled, and it is a great treasure from which supreme and common attainments arise. The light of the well-spoken Dharma shines in ten directions like the sun. The white light that perfectly completes all aspects of the qualities of scripture and realization is the moon. That glorious and holy Guru, possessing these three qualities equally, is beautiful or victorious at the crown of all embodied beings. It is praised in the manner of a prayer. This verse is an ornament of form, in which the example and the exemplified are not separated but made one, yet it is easy to understand and excellent.

If explained separately, the first verse says that just as a treasure is the place where wishes arise, the guru is also the source of accomplishments; the second verse says that just as the sun radiates light, the guru also radiates the light of good teachings; the third verse says that the fifteenth moon is complete, and similarly, the guru is not incomplete, but is praised through the completeness of virtues. In general, whether the root guru's merits are complete or not, there is no certainty when praising. Therefore, the guru mentioned here is obviously referring to Je Tsongkhapa's own root guru. The second part, from "depending on whom" and the following four lines, explains that it is not in detail, but to praise with a few short words. Who is praised? Praise the goddess who, by relying on her, bestows the essence of wisdom, and makes the death-god's staff of untimely death like a stick in a picture, who has become the protector of beings, the Bhagavan Ushnishavijaya. Here, the death-god is Yama, and his staff is a stick, which, when extended to its meaning, is the special feature that causes death. By relying on this goddess, the death-god's staff cannot strike others, just as the image of a stick drawn in a picture cannot strike others, which also means liberation from untimely death. The third part has three points: praise, urging the mind-stream, and aspiration. The first point is divided into two parts: explaining that one cannot praise as it is by one's own power alone, and the actual way of praising. The first part is: "A blind person" and the following two verses. For example, just as a blind person wants to see all kinds of forms and colors but cannot see them, the secret places of your body, speech, and mind, O goddess, are so subtle that I want to describe them, but because I have experienced long kalpas and cannot know them, therefore, I cannot truly describe your merits. Even so, in the pure Tushita Palace, resides the protector Amitayus, who guides the world, from the power of hearing his vast praises to you.
