Commentary on the Second Chapter of the Abhidharmakośa. Commentary on the Second Chapter of the Abhidharmakośa. Here begins the commentary on the Second Chapter of the Abhidharmakośa. The second chapter explains the classification of the sense faculties (indriya) that possess objects, and is divided into three parts: the nature of the twenty-two faculties, the manner in which conditioned phenomena arise, and an explanation from the perspective of causes, conditions, and results. The first part is divided into four points: the reason for establishing them as faculties, the definite number of faculties, their essence, and their classification. The first part is further divided into the views of the Vaibhāṣikas and the Sautrāntikas. First, the view of the Vaibhāṣikas: "The five act on four things, the four on two things, these five and eight, transform in defilement and purification." This has two parts: the meaning of the words and the analysis. First, the five faculties of the eye, etc., by their nature, act on four things: protecting the body, beautifying the body, focusing on objects, and generating their own resulting consciousness. Therefore, they each have four functions, and are called faculties. The first point is established because the eye sees harmful things and protects the body, the ear hears sounds and protects the body, and the nose, tongue, and body nourish the body by enjoying food, thereby protecting it. The second point is established because these faculties are beautiful when present in the body, and not beautiful when absent. The third point is established because these five faculties each focus on their own objects, such as forms and sounds. The fourth point is established because these five faculties have power over the causal condition of their respective consciousnesses. The two faculties of male and female, and the two faculties of life and mind, a total of four, by their nature, act on two things: the first faculty determines the gender of the person on whom it depends as male, and acts on things such as a high-pitched voice; the second faculty determines the gender as female, and acts on things such as a soft voice; the third faculty causes similar faculties to arise from previous faculties, and causes the faculties that have arisen to continue; the fourth faculty causes the connection of continuity from previous faculties to this, and from this to future lives. The word "year" is necessary because it is to refute dissatisfaction with the views of the Vaibhāṣikas, because the explanation of the meaning of these faculties is not included in the views of the Vaibhāṣikas. The two feelings of pleasure and pain, and the two mental states of joy and sorrow, and the five faculties of equanimity.

That. It is called an organ because it controls all afflictions. Why? Because it clings to happiness, hates suffering, and ignorance arises from equanimity. The five faculties of faith, diligence, mindfulness, concentration, and wisdom, and the three faculties that make the unknown known, are the eight dharmas. It is called an organ because it controls the pure side. Why? Because it controls suppressing its unfavorable side and increasing realization. Second, conduct marginal investigation. Some say that all males are represented by the male organ. This is unreasonable because although there is a distinction between male and female beings in the form realm, they do not have male and female organs. Why? Because their male and female are determined by the pitch of their voices and the difference in their breasts. Some say that if a being has a male organ, it must be male. A hermaphrodite is a dharma. Why? Because of that. Why? Because it is a being with both male and female organs. Why? Because it is that dharma. If admitted, then it should be female. Because it is a being with a female organ. The pervasion has already been established. If admitted, then it should be both male and female. The second is: Because it controls its own object and all objects by being able to focus, it is called the six organs. Because the female can control the nature of the male, the female and male organs arise from the body. Because it can control all afflictions and purity in the category, life and all feelings, as well as faith, etc., are considered the five faculties. Because it can control the attainment of higher and higher states from the cessation of suffering, etc., it is called the faculty of knowing all, knowing all, and likewise possessing all knowledge. Thus it is said. The sense organs such as the eye are dharmas. You are called organs because the first five of your six organs can perceive their respective objects, such as the five objects of form, and the sixth organ, the mind, can perceive all dharmas, because it controls perception, so it is said. The two male and female organs are dharmas. It is called an organ because it controls its own nature, because it controls the nature of the female, that is, attachment and behavior tending towards the male, and the nature of the male, that is, the opposite of this. These two are dharmas. It is a part of the body organ, because it is composed of a part of the body.
