The Lamp Illuminating the Essence of the Ocean of Discipline. The Lamp Illuminating the Essence of the Ocean of Discipline. A treatise called "The Lamp Illuminating the Essence of the Ocean of Discipline" is present. Called "The Lamp Illuminating the Essence of the Ocean of Discipline." I prostrate to the All-Knowing One! Having attained the supreme fearlessness in all speech, In the midst of a gathering of many wise ones, with the roar of a lion, You perfectly turned the three wheels of Dharma, I respectfully prostrate to that incomparable teacher. Like the Sage King for all Sutras and Tantras, Like Nagarjuna for the meaning of profound dependent origination, Like Yon Shākya for the vast treatises on discipline, The incomparable Manjushri, the supreme guru, is victorious at the crown. The steadfast wheel of Dharma in the dance of human existence, A great spiritual friend who plays freely as desired, According to the wishes of that omniscient guru, I will clarify the essence of the ocean of individual liberation. Here, to explain the meaning of the Essence of the Ocean of Discipline composed by the great Je Tsongkhapa, there are three parts: the preliminary of entering the explanation, stating the text to be explained; and the activity of the final completion of the entry. The first part is further divided into three: the aspiration as it appears in some other texts, the prostration, and the vow to explain. The first is: Om, may there be well-being and auspiciousness! It is said. The meaning is: Om, although it has many meanings such as supreme and auspicious, here it is to introduce the following words. That is, may all beings temporarily attain the happiness of gods and humans in higher realms, and ultimately attain definitive goodness and reach the state of liberation. In general, the term "well-being and auspiciousness" can be applied to both higher realms and definitive goodness, but here it mainly refers to the happiness of definitive goodness. The second part is the prostration: I prostrate to the All-Knowing One! It is said. The meaning is: Because he directly sees all phenomena, I prostrate to the All-Knowing One, the Buddha Bhagavan. This is because in the past, when translators translated the Vinaya Pitaka, they would first pay homage to the All-Knowing One, when translating the Abhidharma, they would first pay homage to Manjushri, and when translating the Sutra Pitaka, they would first pay homage to the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. In accordance with this decree, this treatise

It belongs to the Vinaya Pitaka, so it was done that way. Third, there are two parts to the commitment: identifying what is to be explained and the actual commitment. First, it is shown by the four lines beginning with "depending on what." What is to be explained here? Depending on what method can one easily, without difficulty, be liberated from all afflictions and thus enter the city of liberation, that is, the state of fruition? That is the supreme essence of the Sugata's teachings of scripture and realization. The name is, since the protectors can individually liberate from samsara, it is called the "Pratimoksha" vows, and that is what will be explained here. The state of liberation is a place of happiness, so it is called a "city," but it is not like a city with houses. Second, the actual commitment is shown by the four lines beginning with "essence and." How will the previously mentioned vows be explained? That vow, namely, the essence, the divisions, the individual determinations, the basis of arising, the cause of abandoning, and the benefits, will be explained as they are through six aspects. Thus it is said. Second, presenting the text that explains, from "renunciation" to "strive to protect." This has six aspects: explanation of the essence of the vows, divisions, determination, basis of arising, cause of abandoning, benefits. The first has two parts: general indication and specific explanation. First, it is taught from "thought of renunciation" to "reversal." What is the essence of the vows like? That is, at the time of taking the vows, the khenpo, acharya, etc., express the difference between the faults of samsara and the benefits of liberation, and the pure thought of renunciation arising from this, or even a false one, is taken as the cause, and it arises based on that, and it is a virtue that prevents harm to other sentient beings, such as killing and the causes of harm. Thus it is said. Then, in the Extensive Explanation, it says, "Without a firm thought of nirvana, vows do not arise." Since it is said that vows do not arise without a genuine thought of renunciation, how is it reasonable that you say that they can arise based on a false one? Generally, is that how it is needed?
