A brief explanation of the three foundations, paths, and results, and the three views, meditations, and practices in the great system. A brief explanation of the three foundations, paths, and results, and the three views, meditations, and practices in the great system. A brief explanation of the three foundations, paths, and results, and the three views, meditations, and practices in the great system. Homage to Shakyamuni! The father of the Victorious Ones, the firm wheel itself, with the dance of the crimson-robed sons of the Victorious Ones. I prostrate to the Second Victorious One, Tsongkhapa, who upholds the doctrine of the Victorious Ones' sutras and tantras. Those who have abandoned the distractions of this life's activities, and have settled in mountain retreats and monasteries, wishing to engage in listening, contemplation, and practice, for those faithful ones, I will explain the means of entry. That is to say, the basis for all of us ordained ones to enter is the three of listening, contemplation, and meditation. In particular, those who engage in solitary retreats must have a good understanding of the three aspects of the base, path, and result, and the three aspects of view, meditation, and conduct. If one understands, one must practice according to reason. Therefore, here, I will explain these aspects briefly. There are three parts to this: the three of base, path, and result; the three of view, meditation, and conduct; and the essence of all practices, which will be explained separately. The first has two aspects: presenting the views of the learned; and summarizing and explaining the meaning of these views. The first is: In the scattered writings of Je Rinpoche, in the treatises of the learned, there are two ways to base: the base for severing imputations with scripture and reason; and the base for engaging in the activity of purifying defilements. According to the first, there are two truths: the ultimate truth is free from elaboration, negating the extreme of existence; the conventional truth is illusory, abandoning the extreme of non-existence; and one is liberated from the evil influence of wrong views of extremes such as imputation and denial, permanence and annihilation. According to the latter, the essence of mind with defilements is naturally primordially pure, and the defilements are adventitious, capable of being separated. Knowing this, one strives to purify the elements. The actual object that purifies defilements is the path of emptiness. However, this path completely purifies defilements and habitual tendencies, depending on the accumulation of limitless merit. Therefore, one should cultivate the vast conduct of the two supreme minds, etc., without satiety, like a stream of water. That is the path that pleases the Victorious Ones and their heirs. Do not be partial.

It is merely joy and happiness. From the profound accumulation of wisdom arises the Dharmakaya, and from the vast accumulation of merit arise the two Rupakayas. This accomplishment is the ultimate fruition, and in sequence, it is the supreme basis for benefiting both oneself and others. Thus it is said. Moreover, from the same source: The nature of the mind with defilements is the basis; the union of method and wisdom is the path; the two bodies, Dharma and Rupa, are the result; the three, basis, path, and result, are all included. Thus it is said. In the collected works of Je Gedun Gyatso, it is said: The view of the basis is the union of appearance and emptiness; the practice of the path is the union of the two accumulations; the result is the spontaneous accomplishment of the union of the two bodies; it is the view, meditation, conduct, and result that please the Buddhas. Thus it is said. From the state of the union of appearance and emptiness, by becoming accustomed to the union of the two accumulations, one attains the union of the two bodies, and thus the two benefits are spontaneously accomplished. Thus it is said. In the collected works of Panchen Rinpoche, it is also said: The intelligence that understands the distinction between the two truths of the basis; the method is seized by the mind of enlightenment; the path is emptiness with compassion as its essence; this is the ultimate essence of all Dharmas. From meditating on such a path, the qualities free from obscurations are like a treasury of space; the ultimate union, the Great Seal; the nature of the three bodies is the result. Thus it is said. The assertion of the tenets of the two truths of the basis is the very nature of appearance and emptiness. For the yogi who is seized by method, isn't the path referred to as the practice of method and wisdom? The profound and vast, inseparable from obscurations, the union at the time of the result, Emaho! Thus it is said. Secondly, the meaning of all the sutras and tantras is contained within the three, basis, path, and result. And these three, there are both those that are explicitly stated with the names and terms, and those that are not. In the Ornament for Clear Realization, it says: "Here, there is nothing to be removed, nor is there anything to be established. Seeing reality as it is, one is liberated by seeing reality." The first two lines refer to the basis, the third to the path, and the fourth to the result. The first two lines refer to the fact that in the basis, the two truths, or the element of naturally pure Dharmadhatu, there is nothing newly established as truly existent that needs to be removed, nor is there anything newly established as non-existent that needs to be established. Because the basis of knowable objects, from the moment of its establishment, or from the very beginning, is not truly established.
