Commentary on "In Praise of Dependent Arising" - Dispelling the Torment of Permanence and Annihilation - The Moon Illuminating the Guru's Intent Commentary on "In Praise of Dependent Arising" - Dispelling the Torment of Permanence and Annihilation - The Moon Illuminating the Guru's Intent Herein is the Commentary on "In Praise of Dependent Arising" - Dispelling the Torment of Permanence and Annihilation - The Moon Illuminating the Guru's Intent. Namo Guru Manjughoshaya. At the summit of the high mountain of the two accumulations, abides the increasing strength of body, wisdom, and compassion. The unbearable fangs and claws of the ten powers and four fearlessnesses, blaze fiercely. The lion's roar of dependent arising, proclaiming that all phenomena are primordially empty in nature. To the lotus feet of the peerless teacher, the lion of speakers, I offer worship until enlightenment. Constantly playing in the depths of the ocean of the Dharmadhatu, Emanating the powerful sound of the essence of dependent arising from everywhere. Adorned with the supreme banner of certainty, To Nagarjuna, the lord of the Nagas, I bow. By the force of the wind of the union of method and wisdom, He frolics in the sky of the conduct of enlightenment. May the all-knowing Tsongkhapa, the friend of the lotus who illuminates the Buddha's doctrine in the four continents, bestow auspiciousness. From the secret mind of that protector, from the peak of the eastern mountain, The white light of the well-spoken praise of dependent arising, Dispels the torment of the views of permanence and annihilation, The meaning of this is clear in the pool of commentary. Here, the essential words and meaning of the well-spoken essence of dependent arising composed by the Lord himself, is the Dharma to be spoken about. This explanation has two parts: Praising the Lord of Sages through the door of explaining dependent arising, and the reason for composing and the dedication. The first has three parts: Briefly stating through the door of offering praise, explaining extensively, and summarizing the meaning. The first is: "Whoever sees," etc., shown by one verse, the meaning is: Actually seeing dependent arising as it is, and through the door of speaking as he himself saw it, establishing the unsurpassed knower and the unsurpassed teacher in sequence, the Victorious One thus established, who sees and teaches dependent arising, to that one I bow with reverence. That is, the first two lines identify the object of praise possessing those qualities, and the latter two lines identify the teacher possessing those qualities.

This is a praise of (the Twelve Nidānas). The second part is a detailed explanation, divided into two parts: the reasons for the praise and the actual praise. The first part is further divided into two parts: presenting the understanding of dependent origination as the core of the teachings, and praising the praise through dependent origination. The first part consists of two verses spoken by the Buddha regarding the decline of the world, etc. The meaning is that in the world, there are various declines such as birth, old age, sickness, and death, as well as those caused by attachment, etc. The ultimate root of these declines lies in the ignorance of clinging to the belief that phenomena and persons have inherent existence, which is the ignorance of clinging to reality. Therefore, directly seeing or realizing the profound nature of dependent origination will cause ignorance to cease. Thus, in order to abandon ignorance, the Buddha taught dependent origination. Here, ignorance refers to the self-grasping that clings to the belief that persons and phenomena have inherent existence, such as thinking 'I' and 'mine.' This kind of ignorance is the root of all other afflictions. As it is said in the *Madhyamakāvatāra*: 'All afflictions and faults arise from the view of the aggregates of existence.' And in the *Pramāṇavārttika*: 'Ignorance is the root of all faults.' Generally, ignorance is divided into two types: ignorance of the law of karma and ignorance of suchness. Here, it refers to the latter, and within the latter, there are both coarse and subtle forms, and here it refers to the subtle form of ignorance. Some people mistakenly believe that miserliness, which is attachment to external and internal objects, is self-grasping, which is a great mistake. This is because in any standard texts of the Greater and Lesser Vehicles, miserliness has not been regarded as self-grasping. It is also said that 'it will be mentioned in later chapters.' Dependent origination is divided into common dependent origination and uncommon dependent origination. That which is established in dependence on its own parts is the meaning of common dependent origination. That which is established in dependence merely through designation or conceptualization is the meaning of uncommon dependent origination. If we differentiate according to the tenets of different schools, there are many. By realizing the meaning of dependent origination, afflictions such as attachment will cease. As Lord Nāgārjuna said in the *Mūlamadhyamakakārikā*: 'When ignorance ceases, it ceases because it is contemplated by wisdom.' And Candrakīrti also said in the *Madhyamakāvatāra*: 'Therefore, this reasoning of dependent origination cuts through all nets of evil views.'
