A Summary of the Essence of Scripture and Reasoning: An Explanation of the Categories of Mind and Sign as Explained in the Two Abhisamayas. A Summary of the Essence of Scripture and Reasoning: An Explanation of the Categories of Mind and Sign as Explained in the Two Abhisamayas. A Summary of the Essence of Scripture and Reasoning: An Explanation of the Categories of Mind and Sign as Explained in the Two Abhisamayas, entitled "Feast for the Wise." Homage to Shakyamuni! The accumulation of wisdom and compassion of all Buddhas, With a youthful body of red and yellow hue, He who is known as Manjushri, May his lotus feet be held in the center of my heart. Here, I will briefly explain the categories of mind and sign. First, regarding the explanation of the categories of mind, although I have already written extensively elsewhere, here I will summarize its essence and explain it in two ways: as explained from the Abhisamaya of Reasoning, and as explained from the Abhisamaya of Scripture. The first way has two parts: the explanation of the categories of mind, and the arguments for examining it. The first has two parts: definition and classification. The first is: Knowledge, the definition of mind. Second, if classified from the perspective of essence, there are two: primary mind and mental factors, which will be explained later. It has been said that there are two types of knowledge: valid and invalid cognition. The first is stated in the Pramāṇavārttika: A valid cognition is a non-deceptive knowledge. This shows that it is divided into definition and classification. The first is: A newly non-deceptive knowledge, the definition of valid cognition. The Sanskrit word for valid cognition is pramāṇa (梵文天城体:प्रमाण,梵文罗马拟音:pramāṇa,汉语字面意思:Measure), which means "non-deceptive," and it also implies the meaning of being established as newly realizing its object, just as initially measuring the object and abiding in the meaning. Second, if valid cognition is classified, there are two types: direct perception valid cognition and inference valid cognition. The first has two parts: definition and classification. The first is: A newly non-deceptive knowledge that is free from conceptual thought and non-erroneous, the definition of direct perception valid cognition. Second, if classified, there are four types: sense direct perception, mental direct perception, self-awareness direct perception, and yogic direct perception. If sense direct perception is classified, there are five types from eye sense direct perception to body sense direct perception. These are from the perspective of apprehending the five objects such as form, and are called form-apprehending sense direct perception to touch-apprehending sense direct perception. Mental direct perception is: Form in the continuum of an ordinary being.
