Due to ignorance of the Dharma, (they) recite the sound of the Dharma in non-Chinese and non-Tibetan pronunciations. Most practitioners in the Gangdise mountains chant mantras in non-Chinese and non-Tibetan pronunciations. Isn't it mostly fruitless labor? So it is said. Furthermore, if the pauses in the mantra are incorrect, the meaning will be reversed. For example, in the Essence of Dependent Arising, "nirodha" (藏文:ནི་རོ་དྷ་,梵文天城体:निरोध,梵文罗马拟音:nirodha,汉语字面意思:cessation) means "cessation." If it is divided as "yoni" (藏文:ཡོ་ནི་), it becomes the name of the female genitalia. Also, "amrita" (藏文:ཨ་མྲྀ་ཏ་ལ།,梵文天城体:अमृत,梵文罗马拟音:amrita,汉语字面意思:nectar) pronounced as "amrita" (藏文:ཨ་མི་རི་ཏ།) means nectar, but if pronounced as "armita" (藏文:ཨར་མི་ཏ་), it becomes the name of poison. Also, "Buddha" (藏文:བུདྡྷ་,梵文天城体:बुद्ध,梵文罗马拟音:buddha,汉语字面意思:Buddha) pronounced as "buddha" (藏文:འབུད་དྷ་) means the name of the Buddha, but if pronounced as "bhuta" (藏文:བྷུ་ཏ་), it becomes "being." There are many such examples. Third, regarding how to transform into enemies and friends, there are two parts: what are the elements, and how to truly transform into enemies and friends. First, there are also differences in which of the great and small elements these vowels and consonants belong to. If considered from the perspective of the great elements, A, Ā, Ka, Kha, Ga, Gha, Nga, Ha (藏文:ཨ་ཨཱ་ཀ་ཁ་ག་གྷ་ང་ྈྐ་) belong to the space element; I, Ī, Tsa, Tsha, Dza, Dzha, Nya, Ya, Sha (藏文:ཨི་ཨཱི་ཙ་ཚ་ཛ་ཛྷ་ཉ་ཡ་ཤ་) belong to the wind element; Ṛ, Ṝ, Ṭa, Ṭha, Ḍa, Ḍha, Ṇa, Ra, Ṣa (藏文:རྀ་རཱྀ་ཊ་ཋ་ཌ་ཌྷ་ཎ་ར་ཥ་) belong to the fire element; U, Ū, Pa, Pha, Ba, Bha, Ma, Wa, Nya (藏文:ཨུ་ཨཱུ་པ་ཕ་བ་བྷ་མ་ཝ་ཉ་) belong to the water element; ḷ, Ḷ, Ta, Tha, Da, Dha, Na, La (藏文:ལྀ་ལཱྀ་ཏ་ཐ་ད་དྷ་ན་ལས་) belong to the earth element. If considered from the perspective of the small elements, ḷ, Ḷ, Ka, Tsa, Ṭa, Ta, Pa, La, Sa (藏文:ལྀ་ལཱྀ་ཀ་ཙ་ཊ་ཏ་པ་ལ་ས་) belong to the earth element; U, Ū, Kha, Tsha, Ṭha, Tha, Pha, Wa, Pa (藏文:ཨུ་ཨཱུ་ཁ་ཚ་ཋ་ཐ་ཕ་ཝ་ྉྤ་) belong to the water element; Ṛ, Ṝ, Ga, Dza, Ḍa, Da, Ba, Ra, Ṣa (藏文:རྀ་རཱྀ་ག་ཛ་ཌ་ད་བ་ར་ཥ་) belong to the fire element; I, Ī, Gha, Dzha, Ḍha, Dha, Bha, Ya, Sha (藏文:ཨི་ཨཱི་གྷ་ཛྷ་ཌྷ་དྷ་བྷ་ཡ་ཤ་) belong to the wind element; A, Ā, Nya, Ṇa, Na, Ma, Ha, Ha (藏文:ཨ་ཨཱ་ཉ་ཎ་ན་མ་ཧ་ྈྐ་) belong to the space element. Second, the enemy of the earth letter is the fire letter. Similarly, the enemy of fire is water, the enemy of water is wind, and the enemy of the wind letter is the earth letter. Earth and water are friends with each other, and fire and wind are also friends with each other. The letter of space is an ally of all other letters, and the other letters are also its allies. Fire has no power over water, water has no power over wind, and wind has no power over earth. Here, the small elements are more important, so it is explained according to the small elements. If the mantra of the deity begins with Om (藏文:ༀ་,梵文天城体:ॐ,梵文罗马拟音:om,汉语字面意思:Om) and Tadyatha, etc., it should be discarded, and the first letter of the remaining letters and the first letter of one's own name should be considered as enemies and friends. Even if there are stacked consonants or prefixes, the first letter should be taken, such as Bazha.

The "ba" of "Shis" meaning auspiciousness, the "ga" of "Dragpa" meaning fame, the "ra" of "Namgyal" meaning victory, the "sa" of "Sarva" (藏文:སརྦ,梵文天城体:सर्व,梵文罗马拟音:sarva,汉语字面意思:一切) of mantra, the "ba" of "Vajra" (藏文:བཛྲ,梵文天城体:वज्र,梵文罗马拟音:vajra,汉语字面意思:金刚) etc., should be grasped. At that time, if they become enemies to each other, it is bad; if they become friends, it is good. If both the large and small elements are in harmony, it is excellent; if the small elements are in harmony, it is moderately good; if only the large elements are in harmony, it is moderately inferior. If nothing is in harmony, it is bad if they become enemies; it is not good even if they become powerless. Therefore, when practicing a deity, it is said that it is very important for the first letter of the deity's mantra and the first letter of one's own name to become friends. It is said: The essential meaning of the grammar ocean treatises, this instruction on how to read, which is gathered into one, is especially necessary for those who diligently engage in mantra recitation. May the goodness, like the rabbit in the moon, created from effort here, with whatever complete parts it possesses, together with dispelling the darkness of ignorance and delusion, cause the light of benefit and happiness to spread in all ten directions! This concise method of reading mantras was written at the request of the faithful Gelek Tashi and Bandhe. Shakya monk Drakpa Shedrup, after carefully examining the oral traditions of many scholars, and noticing some slight differences in the various ways of reading, mainly followed the oral tradition of Pang Lotsawa Chenpo, and because selective readings do not conflict no matter how they are read, he also embellished it with other views. He compiled it in a way that he thought was appropriate, hoping it would be helpful to others. Auspiciousness! The Ornament of Speech on the Method of Reading Mantras.
