The Ornament of Explaining the Method of Reciting Mantras. The Ornament of Explaining the Method of Reciting Mantras. The Ornament called The Ornament of Explaining the Method of Reciting Mantras resides. Namo Manjushriye! From the lotus of the face of the world's ancestor, The well-born Saraswati, daughter of Brahma, May she quickly come forth, proclaiming her exceedingly melodious lute, And enter this garden of joy in my mind! The ocean of change in the well-made language, Though difficult for the small-minded hare to cross by swimming, The nectar of secret instructions passed down through many wise ones, I will give a little from the vase of my mind. Here, I will explain a brief summary of the method of reciting mantras. There are three aspects to this: the classification of letters, the method of recitation, and the way of transforming into enemies and friends. The first has two parts: vowels and consonants. The first is: A Ā I Ī U Ū Ṛ Ṝ Ḷ Ḹ E AI O AU, these fourteen, plus Aṃ Aḥ, make sixteen. The second has two parts: those that belong to a group and those that do not. Those that belong to a group are: Ka Kha Ga Gha Nga, Ca Cha Ja Jha Nya, Ṭa Ṭha Ḍa Ḍha Ṇa, Ta Tha Da Dha Na, Pa Pha Ba Bha Ma, these are the five groups. The second, those that do not belong to a group, are: Ya Ra La Va, these are the four final sounds, Śa Ṣa Sa Ha, these are the four warm sounds, totaling thirty-three. Adding the final letter Kṣa, makes thirty-four, and the tsheg drag, lingual, labial, with bindu, makes thirty-eight. Therefore, the Indian alphabet does not have the three letters Ca Cha Ja and the two letters Ṡa and Za, totaling five. Although "A" does not appear directly, it appears as an attachment. Second, the method of recitation has two parts: the difference in the place of origin and the actual method of recitation. The first is: A Ā Ka Kha Ga Gha Nga Ha ᾼ these are produced from the throat. I Ī Ca Cha Ja Jha Nya Ya Śa these are produced from the tip of the tongue and the gums. Ṛ Ṝ Ṭa Ṭha Ḍa Ḍha Ṇa Ra Ṣa these are produced from the crown of the head. U Ū Pa Pha Ba Bha Ma Va Pa these are produced from the lips. Ḷ Ḹ Ta Tha Da Dha Na La Sa these are produced from the tip of the tongue and the teeth. Thus, if the place of origin is well determined, the method of recitation will also be known. That is, from A Ā to Aṃ Aḥ, and from Ka Kha to Bha Ma, it arises from the throat to the lips in a way that moves up and down in order. Then, there is something like moving towards the depths of the palate in a way that contracts inward again. This also arises according to the desire to express.

Thus. The great translator Dpang lo chen po said, "By the power of conceptualization, the wind stirs, and from it arise the place, the action, and the effort, thus expelling breath, and together arise the sounds of letters." The second (part) has two: a general presentation and a specific explanation. First, any letter with a vertical stroke and a naro attached, such as ཀེ་ཀོ་ཀཱ་, is called a long sound and should be read for the duration of two blinks of an eye. Those with three curved strokes of paluta, such as śuddho’haṃ, are very long and should be read for the duration of three blinks of an eye. Those that are not long, such as ཨ་ཨི་ཨུ་རྀ་ལྀ་ཀ་ཁ་ག་གྷ་ང་, should be read for the duration of one blink of an eye. As it says in the Commentary on Valid Cognition, "The nature of letters, all boundaries, are also measured by the blink of an eye." Second, the specific explanation has two: vowels and consonants. First, regarding vowels, there are two vowels with keshas, read like ཨེ་ཨི་ཨོ་ཨུ་. As it says, the vowels ཨཻ་ and ཨཽ་ are known as having keshas. The Indian script has a symbol for it, but it does not have a double stacking of vertical strokes and naros. Tibetan script has one vertical stroke and one naro each, so ཨཻ་ should be read as ཨེ་ཨི་ and ཨཽ་ should be read as ཨོ་ཨུ་. If these two letters enter as the life of consonants such as ཀ་, they become ཀེ་ཀཽ་, etc. At that time, ཀཻ་ should be read as ཀེ་ཨི་ and ཀཽ་ should be read as ཀཽ་ཨུ་. Writing འུ་ in words like kauśika and gautama is due to the similarity in pronunciation between ཨུ་ and འུ་. Regarding how to read ཀྲྀ་ཀླྀ་, where རྀ་ and ལྀ་ enter as the life of consonants such as ཀ་, Dpang lo chen po said, "When རྀ་ and ལྀ་ enter as the life of letters such as ཀ་, read quickly as ཀིར་རི་གེལ་ལི་." Snar thang lo ts'a said, "Read quickly as ཀི་རི་ཀི་ལི་." Tāranātha said, "They should be read as ཀི་རིང་ and ཀི་ལི་." Although in Tibetan script, རྀ་ and ལྀ་ have a reversed gi gu on top of ར་ and ལ་, in Indian script, they appear as independent forms that are not the letters ར་ and ལ་. The རྀ་ with a reversed gi gu is similar to dbri, and ལྀ་ is similar to kli, or Tāranātha considers ལྀ་ to be similar to lila and lir as well. ཀྲི་ཀླི་ without a reversed gi gu should be read quickly as ཀ་རི་ཀ་ལི་. The pronunciation of འ་ is the same as ཨ་.
