To that teacher who strives in the ocean of the two accumulations, the maṇḍala, from whose perfect churning arises the jewel that accomplishes the two aims, who, having become manifest, grants the supreme wish for the benefit and happiness of beings, to that teacher I bow. Merely by entering the vast city of the teachings of definitive and interpretable meaning, blazing with a thousand rays of discriminating wisdom, he causes the thousand petals of the teachings of the Sage to bloom in every way. To that omniscient Tsongkhapa, I bow with body, speech, and mind. Having tasted the essence of the nectar of that protector's excellent explanations, having completely understood all the vast scriptures, the supreme guru who clearly reveals them as they are, and the two chief sons, are also worthy of reverence. Through outstanding diligence, having thoroughly studied many fields of knowledge, having reached the end of both one's own and others' philosophical tenets, and being inseparable from the virtuous spiritual friend, who is the lord of speech in explanation, debate, and composition, may they always be victorious. When the extent of the ocean-like scriptures is measured with a single step of wisdom, those who do not know, with their strength, bind it underground. Those wise ones with lotus eyes are worthy of praise. Having thus offered praise, what is to be explained is this: for the benefit of some who seek wisdom, I will explain, having gathered together the essential meanings of the philosophical tenets of both one's own and others' traditions. However, if there are too many quotations and the like, those of lesser intelligence will not be able to understand. Therefore, I will explain, adorning it with a few quotations. There are two parts to this: distinguishing the differences between outer and inner, and explaining the differences between the philosophical tenets individually. Firstly, who established the term \"philosophical tenet\"? The term \"philosophical tenet\" of our own school was spoken by the Teacher himself, as it is said in the Laṅkāvatāra Sūtra: \"My doctrine has two aspects: the teaching and the philosophical tenet.\" The meaning of the word \"philosophical tenet\" is that, having refuted the extraneous aspects imputed by conceptual thought, it is established as acceptable in one's own mind, hence it is a \"philosophical tenet.\" Since philosophical tenets are definitely of two kinds, those who enter into them are also definitely of two kinds: outer and inner persons. The difference between outer and inner is generally distinguished by taking refuge, etc., and there are different ways of distinguishing them." } ] ============================================================

I will here distinguish between the three aspects of teacher, doctrine, and view. That is to say, the teacher who has exhausted all faults and perfected all virtues, the sacred Dharma taught by him, and the view that acknowledges the realization of the subtle and gross aspects of the selflessness of the individual, are Buddhists. To assert the opposite of these three is to be an outsider. Regarding acknowledging a teacher, as it says in the "Praise of the Excellent God": I do not adhere to the side of the Buddha, nor do I hate Kapila, and whatever words are in accordance with reason, I accept as my teacher. As Je Tsongkhapa said in the upper part of the Great Stages of Mantra, and as Gyaltsab Je said in the lower part of the commentary on the Compendium of Valid Cognition, those of lesser intelligence follow their own teacher and regard the Dharma taught by him as something to be practiced, and take refuge in it. This is only through faith and speculation. Those of great intelligence, from the very beginning, do not think of their own teacher out of partiality and attachment, nor do they think that this is what he said. Instead, they examine well which of the teachings of the outer and inner teachers is reasonable, and which is not. Then, they become certain that their own teacher's teaching is well-spoken, and that the other's is the opposite. Therefore, one must follow one's own teacher and his teachings. Therefore, with regard to the teachings, the Buddha's scriptural and realization teachings are the means of accomplishing the temporary and ultimate benefit and happiness of those to be tamed, while the teachings of others are certainly the opposite. The view of our own school is to regard conditioned things as impermanent, etc., the four seals or any of them, and the special view is the view of realizing the subtle selflessness. Although the Vaisheshika school of our own tradition acknowledges an inexpressible self, they assert the selflessness that is empty of permanence, oneness, and independence, so they do not deny the four seals. Second, explaining the differences separately, among the two philosophical systems of outer and inner, the first has three points: the order of arising, the meaning of the name, and the separate explanations. The first point is, as explained by the commentary on the "Excellent Praise," in the past, countless eons ago, there was a Brahmin named Kapila.
