The two consciousnesses in a continuum are not one and the same. Just as a student's speech arises from hearing the words of a teacher, so too does the later consciousness arise in dependence on the earlier consciousness. It is not something else that arises suddenly without dependence. Similarly, just as a second flame arises from a flame, an image of a face appears in a mirror, a raised or elongated form arises from a mold for statues, fire arises from a firestone, a sprout arises from a seed, saliva flows from seeing sour fruits or foods, and an echo arises from a sound, the same reasoning should be applied. These are all examples of the latter arising in dependence on the former. One should understand how the later arises in dependence on the former life and the former consciousness. These examples are clearly explained in the sutras, and I have explained them in more detail elsewhere. I have not written much about them here for fear of being verbose. Furthermore, although death and transference exist nominally, the sutra says: 'Great King, there is no dharma that transmigrates from this world to another world, but death, transference, and birth are apparent. Great King, the cessation of the last consciousness is called death and transference, and the arising of the first consciousness is called birth. Great King, when the last consciousness ceases, it does not go anywhere, and when the consciousness arises, it does not come from anywhere.' As quoted above, the aggregation of aggregates is also something that the wise should understand as not transmigrating. These teachings indicate that although there is no actual transference at death in the ultimate sense, it does occur nominally. That is, the essence of consciousness or the previous life does not transmigrate into the nature of the next life without being completely transformed. The next life does not come from somewhere else independently of the previous one, but merely nominally, death and transference are said to occur as the next life arises in dependence on the previous one. Understanding this way, one will be free from the two extremes of permanence and annihilation. Otherwise, clinging to true existence leads to the extreme of permanence, while holding that there is absolutely nothing leads to the extreme of annihilation. Death and transference exist nominally.

Just as all phenomena are empty in their own nature and free from the two extremes, so too are the arising and ceasing of all conditioned phenomena. As it is said in the Extensive Play Sutra: 'If there is a seed, there is a sprout, just as it is. The seed is not the sprout itself. It is not different from it, nor is it non-existent. Therefore, it is neither permanent nor discontinuous.' And: 'From a seal, the impression of the seal is visible, but the seal is not seen to have moved. It is not in it, nor is it in another. Thus, conditioned things are neither permanent nor discontinuous.' This is how it is taught. The meaning of the first verse is explained in the commentary on the Root Wisdom, which states that it prevents the seed itself from transferring and going to the sprout, and the sprout from coming from somewhere other than the seed. The meaning of the second verse is that, for example, when the image of the seal appears from the seal on the base where it is pressed, the seal does not move there, nor does it come from somewhere other than the seal. By using this as an example, it is explained that all conditioned phenomena, when the result arises, do not come from anywhere, and when the cause ceases, they do not go anywhere, thus being free from permanence and annihilation. Therefore, one should not be attached to the speculations of the ignorant people of the world and the assertions of the realists, but should strive to understand that the death and rebirth of the Madhyamaka system, and other conditioned phenomena, are free from the two extremes of permanence and annihilation. Secondly, as an aside, in the system of Unsurpassed Yoga, ignorance that grasps at reality is taken as the root of samsara. Relying on the extremely subtle wind-mind, the habitual imprints of karma are imprinted on the imputed "I", and thus the connection is made in future rebirths. As it is said in the Disclosure of Intentions Sutra: 'With consciousness and without consciousness, established as sentient beings, they arise from the wind, and again cease from the wind. The mind that does not understand, although it dwells in the ocean of samsara, because of its perversion, the mind also transforms into dogs, wolves, elephants, and horses.' And as it is said in the Vajra Garland: 'Birth, abiding, and destruction, and abiding in the intermediate existence, as the world establishes it, are the magical manifestations of the wind of the mind.' It is in this way that rebirth is taken. This is just a brief illustration, as the reasoning is extremely profound and secret.

Since it is the place of..., it will not be explained in detail here. It is said: The precious jewel of the treasury of the Victorious One's teachings, The manner of the Four Noble Truths, dependent origination, death, and transference, According to the intentions of the great chariots (Tsongkhapa's tradition), Explained in brief, unerring, and easy-to-understand words. This was also written by a Shakya monk named Shedrup, motivated by the intention to benefit others. May it be virtuous! The establishment of the Four Noble Truths and dependent origination, the illuminator of the path to liberation.
