The Establishment of the Four Noble Truths and Dependent Arising, Illuminating the Path to Liberation. The Establishment of the Four Noble Truths and Dependent Arising, Illuminating the Path to Liberation. This is the treatise called "The Establishment of the Four Noble Truths and Dependent Arising, Illuminating the Path to Liberation." Homage to Shakyamuni Buddha! The scriptures of the Victorious Ones, both direct and definitive, explained according to the intention of the Victorious Ones themselves, to the prophesied Nagarjuna, Asanga, and others, the sons of the Victorious Ones, ornaments of Jambudvipa, I pay homage. Here, I shall briefly explain some of the main points that appear in the scriptures of the Sage and the great commentaries that explain them. This has three parts: the establishment of the four noble truths, the establishment of the twelve links of dependent arising, and the order of how death and transference occur. The first has seven parts: the definite number of the four noble truths, the order, the difference in essence, whether they exist in which continuum, how the aspects are established, the meaning of the words, and the purpose. The first is: For a person who desires liberation, the four noble truths are definitely numbered as the main things to be determined and adopted or rejected, because the order of entering and leaving samsara is definite in those four. That is, the cause of entering samsara is definitely the truth of origination, and the result of being bound is definitely the truth of suffering; and the cause of turning away from samsara is definitely the truth of the path, and the result of being free from it is definitely the truth of cessation. The second, the order, is: The Bhagavan spoke of two orders of teaching the four noble truths in many sutras. That is, from the point of view of the order of cause and effect, first the truth of origination, then the truth of the path, then the truth of suffering, and then the truth of cessation were taught. From the point of view of the order of arising of realization, first the truth of suffering, then the truth of origination, then the truth of cessation, and then the truth of the path were taught. Here, speaking from the point of view of the latter, there is a need to teach the order in that way. When entering into the adoption and rejection of the four noble truths, first we must understand how we are tormented by the suffering of samsara such as birth, old age, sickness, and death, and generate the mind of wanting to abandon that suffering, so the truth of suffering is taught first. Then, knowing where that suffering comes from, that is, from the afflictions of attachment and the origination of karma, we must generate the mind of wanting to abandon that, so the truth of origination is taught second. Then, the truth of cessation, which is the cessation of suffering and origination, is the dharma to be realized. If we realize that, we can be liberated from samsara, so the truth of cessation is taught third. Then, in order to realize the truth of cessation, we must practice the truth of the path, so the truth of the path is taught last.

Because it is necessary to generate the mind of wanting to attain the liberation of cessation, which is the truth of cessation that abandons the two obscurations, the truth of cessation is taught in the third position. After that, in order to attain that liberation, it is necessary to rely on the truth of the path, such as the wisdom that directly realizes selflessness, in one's own mindstream, so the truth of the path is taught in the fourth position. That is to say, for example, like us, one must first know the suffering of being tormented by disease. If one knows that, one will generate the desire to abandon the cause of that suffering. If that arises, one will generate the desire to attain the happiness of being free from the suffering of disease, and one will engage in taking medicine for that purpose. As the venerable Maitreya said: Disease is to be known, the cause of disease is to be abandoned, true happiness is to be attained, and medicine is to be taken. Suffering, the cause of suffering, the cessation of suffering, and the path, are to be known, abandoned, realized, and cultivated. Therefore, the order of meditating on the four truths is also like that. If we consider the order of cause and effect, from the truth of origin on the side of afflictions, the truth of suffering arises, and from the truth of the path on the side of purification, the truth of cessation is attained. The third is the difference in essence. The noble Asanga said in the Compendium of Abhidharma: What is the truth of suffering? The birth of sentient beings and the place of birth should also be known. And: Whatever is the world of sentient beings, and whatever is the world of containers, born from the power of karma and afflictions, arisen from the power of karma and afflictions, these are called the truth of suffering. And: What is the truth of origin? Afflictions and the karma arising from their power. As it is said. Although there is not much difference in the synonyms of these, there are many different views on the definition. Even so, if the main focus is on understanding the meaning, then the aggregates of appropriation that have been marked by the truth of origin, which is the cause of oneself, are the definition of the truth of suffering. Dividing it from the perspective of essence, there are three types of suffering: the suffering of suffering, the suffering of change, and pervasive suffering of conditioning. The first is like the excruciating pain of being tormented by intense sensations in the body. The second is like the pleasant sensation of enjoying delicious food because of craving its taste.
