It is said that one should do so. However, due to the influence of the times, it seems very difficult and rare to do so now. Even so, one should not stay at will without avoiding transgressions, because it is said that properly guarding the three vows will accomplish the benefits of higher realms and definite goodness, and if one does not guard them, one will suffer endless misdeeds and bad destinies. As it is said in the Compendium: Through discipline, one can obtain the nature of many animal migrations, and always find leisure that avoids the eight unfavorable conditions. And as it is said in the Sutra: Just as a good vase appears precious, so too, discipline is the basis for generating all dharmas. Again, as it is said in the Sutra: Monks, it is easy to give up life and die, but it is not so with discipline being broken and destroyed. Why is that? Because giving up life and dying will only end the life of this life, but discipline being broken and destroyed will cause one to be separated from lineage for hundreds of millions of kalpas, abandoning happiness and experiencing great downfalls. Therefore, those who wish to benefit themselves should make every effort to eliminate transgressions every day by various means, especially reciting dharanis such as the Hundred Syllable Mantra, practicing emptiness, reciting profound sutras, taking refuge, prostrating, reciting the names of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, making tsatsas, etc., and especially making every effort to engage in the confession and restraint of the four powers. However, in order to make it easier to enter, if one wants to confess the transgressions of the three vows in common, one should do this: Visualize in the sky in front of you the two lords, Shakyamuni and Vajradhara, surrounded by the root and lineage gurus, Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, Shravakas, Pratyekabuddhas, Yidams, heroes, dakinis, Dharma protectors, and guardian deities, appearing vividly. Request all the Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, Shravakas, Pratyekabuddhas, and other noble beings abiding in the ten directions to consider me. I, so-and-so, from beginningless samsara until now, being controlled by the afflictions of desire, hatred, and ignorance, have committed all transgressions against what has been prescribed and against their own nature, especially the four root downfalls and the thirteen remainders, the thirty expiatory downfalls, the downfalls

Having transgressed the Pratimoksha vows by committing any of the ninety isolated offenses, the four individual confessions, and the one hundred and twelve misdeeds; having violated the Bodhisattva precepts by committing any of the eighteen root downfalls and the forty-six misdeeds; and having transgressed any of the vows and commitments of the five families, both general and individual, by committing the fourteen root downfalls and the eight gross offenses as appropriate, in short, I confess and regret all the accumulations of misdeeds and transgressions that have become obstacles to higher realms and liberation, and causes for samsara and the lower realms. I will not conceal them, and I vow to restrain and guard them to the best of my ability in the future. Please purify them. Repeat this three or seven times, or as appropriate, and at the end, it is also acceptable to say "I confess and repent." However, if the confession is merely a verbal recitation, its power is small. Therefore, one should take refuge with the mind of relying on the objects of refuge, believing from the depths of one's heart that they have the power to protect from fear, which is the power of reliance. One should regret and repent of past misdeeds as if one had swallowed poison, which is the power of remorse. One should vow from the bottom of one's heart not to do them again in the future, which is the power of reversal. One should request blessings and remember that all things, such as the object of confession, the object to be confessed, and the manner of confession, appear like illusions and dreams, without inherent existence, which is the power of the all-encompassing antidote. One should strive to confess through the completion of the four powers. It is said: Even if one transcends the subtle and gross precepts established by the Buddha, who, whether wise or foolish, can avoid confessing and repenting? Alas, one will be burned for an eon in the great blazing fire of the suffering of the lower realms! A few wise people who truly see this way, for the benefit of themselves and others like themselves, should urge the collection and clarification of the essence of the pure conduct of the three vows. Although it is uncertain whether I will be reborn again and I do not possess many retinues, disciples, and wealth, I still intend to connect with the good words of wise and holy beings and to explain the meaning of the scriptures with certainty. The places of conduct are deep and vast, I

My intellect is small, and the power of my practice is also weak. Because I wanted to be brief, I have made a summarized statement. If I have made any unclear or incorrect statements, I confess them. May the pure virtue obtained from explaining things as they are, in the lotus garden of the three trainings, where the liberation-desiring bees reside, by experiencing the essence of various perfect manifestations, may I proceed without obstruction in the definitive and excellent sky! This is a brief explanation of the distinctions of what to abandon and adopt in each of the three vows: Pratimoksha, Bodhisattva, and Secret Mantra. This was written because of the encouragement of those who are interested, by the Shakya monk, the learned Grakpa Shedrup, thinking that it might also benefit others. At the time of writing, the esteemed Lord's Son, the young Lord Rinpoche, bestowed a donation of fifteen printing blocks, and thus it was completed in the year of Beautification. Sarva Mangalam (Tibetan, Sanskrit Devanagari: सर्व मङ्गलम्, Sanskrit Romanization: sarva maṅgalam, Literal Chinese meaning: All auspiciousness!).
