Now, regarding the distinctions of severance and realization, and understanding the distinctions of activities. Third: The teacher Buddha is the one who shows refuge, the Dharma Nirvana is the actual refuge, and the noble Sangha is the vow to be a companion in accomplishment. Fourth: Having taken refuge in the Three Jewels, one must take refuge in the Three Jewels themselves, and should not take refuge in other things that appear to be refuges but are inconsistent with the Three Jewels. Fifth, regarding the precepts, there are two types: individual precepts and common precepts. The first is further divided into two: precepts of prohibition and precepts of accomplishment. The first is: As stated in the Nirvana Sutra: "Whoever takes refuge in the Three Jewels is a true lay follower, and should never take refuge in other gods. Those who take refuge in the sacred Dharma should be free from the mind of harming and injuring. Those who take refuge in the Sangha should not associate with non-Buddhists." The second is: One should regard Buddha images, even a single verse of the Dharma, and even those who merely hold the appearance of renunciates, as real and treat them with respect. The second is that there are ten common precepts: relying on holy individuals, properly directing the mind, taking vows, having great compassion, remembering the qualities of the Three Jewels, making offerings to the best of one's ability, encouraging others to make offerings to the Three Jewels, praying to the Three Jewels no matter what the need, understanding the benefits and taking refuge three times during the day and three times during the night, and not abandoning the Three Jewels even at the cost of one's life. If one violates other precepts of refuge, although there is fault, one does not abandon refuge; if one violates the latter, one abandons refuge, so one must be very careful. Sixth, the benefits are eight: becoming an inner Buddhist, becoming the basis of all vows, purifying obscurations, completing accumulations, not falling into the lower realms, being difficult to be obstructed by obstacles, accomplishing wishes, and quickly attaining Buddhahood. Second is the incidental meaning: In general, whether it is Sutra or Tantra, the nature of refuge and the way of taking refuge are as previously described. However, in the context of Anuttarayoga, the classification of the three bodies is slightly different from that of the Sutra system, namely, the Sambhogakaya that does not possess the five certainties, and that which is conditioned.

It is also said that the essence itself is also considered the Dharmakaya. The mere term "three bodies" also exists in the context of the three stages of ground, path, and fruition. The gurus, yidams, dakinis, and dharma protectors are also included in any of the Three Jewels, because those among them who are Buddhas are the Buddhas themselves, and the rest are included in the Sangha. Therefore, some people quote Milarepa as saying, "The Three Jewels of Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha, these three are the outer refuge." And "The three of the guru, yidam, and dakini, these three are the inner refuge." And "The three of channels, winds, and bindus, these three are the secret refuge." Although based on these words, the terms of outer, inner, and secret refuge are used in the case of mantra. However, if there is an explanation from the tantras, scriptures, etc., then Je Yabse should also explain it clearly, but since it is not there, it is best to remain neutral here. The visualization sequence and rituals of taking refuge should be learned from elsewhere, because I was worried about too much content, so I did not write it. Said: For those who, in the Victorious One's teachings, do not merely follow the Three Jewels in words, but want to take refuge by following reason, it is essential to understand the nature and characteristics of refuge. If you do not understand these principles, then treating written, carved Buddha images, etc., as images of refuge, even if you treat them as real objects of refuge, is like a blind person shooting an arrow, unable to see the target. If you do not respectfully serve and offer to the sacred field of merit—the guru and the Three Jewels—but instead always rely on them like a herd of animals, then what is such a renunciant in the teachings? If you gain benefits, it is the grace of the Three Jewels; if you do not gain them, you do not have the ability to abide without regret, but you make special efforts for this, then what is the purpose of your renunciation? This passage was also written by a Shakya monk named Shedrup, solely out of the desire to benefit others. May this also benefit the teachings of the Victorious One! Mangalam!
